You are correct. This is not true. The insurance policies typically are insuring earning capacity of the player across the course of a career, not any given contract. Depends on what you buy and what the actuaries say.

Maybe this works if Toronto buys him a huge insurance policy guaranteeing $100 million is career earnings in the instance of injury. Wonder how that would be treated for cap purposes...

8 years x 8 mil with NYI being nice = 86 million..

why leave 46 million dollars on the table to play a year for Toronto? Sure maybe you win a cup, but also maybe you get concussed and don't sign another contract again, or only put up 20 points and now you're worth 2 million instead of 8.

But If JT signs a 1 year max deal, he could then resign with Toronto at 8 years 10 per.
Thus...making 100 million over 9 years.
