For that matter, why would anyone after making $16M in a single year, even give a crap about their future earnings?
Can't take it with you...

if he is going to sign a 1 yr deal it's not going to be with TO. more likely to sign a 1 yr deal with a team that has a real chance at winning the cup.
like someone said before he is signing with the isls |

Of course Toronto does this. Matthews and Kadri have already volunteered to have their playing time cut for the honour of playing with him. Oh, that's right, they'd probably be pissed. |

With the Tom Wilson Meta upon us, every skilled player will be looking to maximize their guaranteed money. No way Tavares goes for any 1 year deal. |

why the (frank) would tavares sign a 1 year deal? If he has a career ending injury, he misses out on 50 million - BestRapperAlive
People keep saying this but don't these guys have humongous insurance policies?

Probably, but I can't imagine that the policy is as valuable as his long-term deal will be. Also, depending on how long he's had it, he may have already paid a significant amount towards it which kinda devalues it. Unless he signed an $80M policy and got hurt the next day...he's probably just better off not signing a one year deal. |

Why, they'd put JT on the wing? They don't play Galchenyuk at center. |

Don't get me wrong, I am not debating the idiocy of the suggestion that he is interested in a one year deal.

How is this a win/win? Tavares has to cash in on what he's earned...
1 year x 20 mil with Toronto = 20 million
8 years x 8 mil with NYI being nice = 86 million..
why leave 46 million dollars on the table to play a year for Toronto? Sure maybe you win a cup, but also maybe you get concussed and don't sign another contract again, or only put up 20 points and now you're worth 2 million instead of 8. |

First of all, I don't see that happening and Toronto should focus on D. They got plenty of young forwards coming from Marlies.
But It is possible for both sides. Toronto got only one more year before Mathews and Marner deals kick in. Also Tavaras will be 27 or 28 next year and he can sign anywhere he wants. He just need to focus on his health and he will make more money if he sign next year instead of this because of the cap going up again.
It doesn't matter what he is not going to sign with teams like Montreal or other bottem teams. Otherwise he will sign in with NY. |

Insurance companies are not in the business of losing money. There needs to be some guarantee otherwise the cost of the policy would outweigh the insurance coverage.
There are many different types they can get from draft protection, IUL (which is essentially a savings plan), loss of value, future contract protection but they are all very expensive. |

There's about 25 teams better than the Isles. He'll be happy going to any of them. But ultimately, it won't be the Leafs. |

I mean...in the most literal of terms, yes. It is, technically, possible. But it's completely and totally illogical for Tavares. |
