It’s extremely unlikely we will be close enough to the Cap for it to have an effect

There’s ppl on here who wanna buy out Bogo, and he’d cost like 2mil i believe
Now that’s a significant enough amount that I’d say not to do it

- jdfitz77

Another extremely unlikely scenario. Matt Moulson was ready to call every free agent and tell them BUFFALO SUCKS, but then he got a call from GMJB saying that he's getting bought out, instead of collecting $2m to live in California all year. Moulson immediately posts a glowing review the NHLPA union website and droves of FAs flock to Buffalo to commend GMJB, and they all sign contracts

No they aren’t
It buys good will
And the Cap hit won’t hurt us
It’s obvious, even if u refuse to admit it

- jdfitz77

You don’t use a buyout on someone who has 1 year left.

The Sabres did more than they needed too.

It’s like breaking up with an ex

You give her money for a security deposit.

But you want to do that and pay her rent for a year.

It’s dumb.

See post above, if you get close to the cap in could prohibit you from making roster moves for injuries and calling players up.

I think it was two years ago the Sabres had to "Send guys down" so their salary wouldnt count towards the cap for days at a time.

So yes, 3/4 of a million dollars could really affect your roster.

- ImThatGuy

I think it’s very unlikely we’d be in that situation

It's not the ideal trade scenario.

You do not trade your best trade chip in ROR for ANOTHER young Dman with top 4 potential. We already have 3 or 4 of those. Thomas is a decent C prospect with likely 3C ceiling or maybe 2C... AGAIN... we have PLENTY of 2C/3C potential players. Then you get a 28th overall 1st round pick.

It's not "the worst" but it's a dumb trade because you are dealing your best chip for 2 areas where we already have a plethora of depth at.

- JVince11

I disagree with the center depth. We have Cliff Pu and Asplund. But to the greater point, I think the value is fair, but I personally would not use ROR in this fashion. I would upgrade the wing as well.

Yeah, pass. Eichel needs wingers now, not in 3 years
- jcragcrumple

BINGO!!!

All it does it create more log jam that makes you not have solved the original problem plus make you have to probably trade more players down the line to eventually solve that initial problem.

Depends what you're looking for as far as short or long. This one is mid -Thomas a year away, 28th OA couple years away- and you get a legit top 4 (or more) in Dunn. Of course, it creates a log jam, and we'd need to bring that vet center back somehow, but it would bolster our pathetic top 6 center depth, our D depth and our overall prospect depth. Sign a FA or trade a depth D for a defensive center.

Now you're left with the wing still being poopty without your best trade chip. So, really, it depends on your goals for the season.

Thomas will challenge for an NHL spot this season

So what is the tangible value of the good will you're talking about. Is it only in Moulson's head?

Just like you’re widely exaggerating that buying a player out would be good will for him and would be a reason FAs would sign here.

But buying it Bogo saves cap space for the next 3 seasons in the millions. It’s two totally different scenarios.

A Bogo buyout is thinking long term.

You’re completely missing the point of what the buyouts are for.

- Stripes77

It’s also dead money long term
Seems like u aren’t taking that into account

And you’re also making way too big of a deal over a .67mil Cap hit
Come on man

Makes the organization look good to players in general

Is it a huge deal?
Of course not

I just think that little things like that add up

You’re comparison is dumb
If i thought the .67mil would affect us in any way,
then I’d totally be with you
But i don’t think it will

Pu is a RW.

Centers w/ likely 3C potential in our system:
Asplund
E-Rod
Davidsson (2nd rder last year)
Oglevie (from college)
Estephan
Connor Hurley

Defensemen w/ likely top 4 potential in our system:
Dahlin
Risto
Guhle
McCabe

MAYBE: Nelson, Fitzgerald, Borgen.

Trading ROR to just add more people to these two lists is the exact opposite of needs.

8 days from drafting the best defensive prospect in 40 years and we’re talking about someone not even on the team last year, gotta love this site and some of the discussions.

Even if he does....

Eichel, ROR, Casey, Sam, E-Rod, Asplund, or Zemgus/Larsson would be ahead of him and he'd be buried on the 4th line or in Rochester.

Players around the league in general

“Hey, that’s an organization that gave a Vet one last chance to catch on somewhere
They didn’t have to do that
Good on them”

Again,
little things like that add up imo

And the Cap hit almost certainly will not hurt us

There's the tangible value of $667k (Erod's salary) on one hand, and doing Moulson an enormous favor, after having done him a favor already on the other.

It's up to him now. If he wants to play in the A this year instead of retirement, and Ontario will take him again, then there ya go. The Sabres don't owe Matt Moulson so much that they hurt their own cap to further appease his feelings

True.

Gotta mix up the scenario topics of cocaine cowboys, ROR to everywhere, Sam to everywhere, Risto to everywhere, and the ROR/Eichel cat fights.

You keep saying the same thing OVER AND OVER AND OVER 6 pages later we get it. You want to buy him out. Can we stop now? I'm sure if someone calls him he is giving a great review of being sent to California and getting paid his entire contract.

Two years from now:

Hey UFA we would like to sign you to this contract, because we feel you are one of the key pieces to get us further to the playoffs how do you feel about it?

Well ya know i would, but i noticed two years ago, that you didn't buy out Matt Moulson and that really shed a negative light on the buffalo Sabres, so i think i am gona pass.

Three years from now.

Hey Dahlin, here is your 8 Year 90MM contract offer.

Dahlin - You know, Matt Moulson should have been bought out three years ago to give that guy another chance at playing in the NHL. You'll have to increase my offer just because of that.
