Sparks should be the backup if they are forced to make a decision.
Trade McElhinney..assuming you can anything for him. 35 yo goalie with a career .909 sv%. He was good last season but does he do that again? doubtful
The Leafs drafted sparks and have put a ton of time and development into him. Would seem odd to just bail, especially after putting up some alltime numbers in the AHL this season. The Leafs have to also think past Andersen. Mcbakcup wont be around then - senstroll
Many goalies have had good to great numbers in the ahl. It doesnt always translate to nhl success.
But i do agree, sparks is younger, give him some nhl games....see how he does. |

10million for mathews.
8.75million for marner.
i don't expect there will be more than 5% difference on those numbers - MaximusAurelius
Matthews around 10-11 or if his agent his smart he ask for the superstar 13-15% of the cap deal giving him 11- 12.75 per.
Marner and nylander, nothing over 7.5 |

I don't think Matthews gets $11M or more. That would make him the 2nd highest paid player in the league behind McDavid. As much as I love Matthews, he is not quite there yet.

the most i could see is 10.5.
i would be a lot happier if he settled for 9.5, but i doubt it happens. |

Could be but I don't blame the guy for going a little wild. He deserves a little fun with the crap from the media he has put up with. - Rang
Oh, I totally agree. If the leafs ever win, they will and should go totally bonkers. Who cares about the following season or even your career. Winning the CUP is everything |

The only thing that really matters is if you are getting more value from the player than you are paying him overall (over the contract length). Projecting players production and cap.it makes sense to sign him now for around 11 with an 80 mil cap. He is worth it
The Leafs paid Kessel 8 mil when the cap was 69 just for comparison. |

I think he will get what Eichel got $10M per season, maybe $10.5M per like Toews and Kane. Even then, they won 3 Cups before their big payouts |

That doesnt matter.
Hes not getting paid based on where he stands in the league as being the best.
Hes getting paid as to where he stands on the team in terms of importance.
As the cap goes up yearly, so will salaries. Super stars usually ask for about 13-15% of the cap if they have a good agent.
Matthews is the teams superstar, he'll get a certain percent of the cap......doesnt matter if its more than or close to another superstar who signed two years back. |

He drafted Nylander ahead of Ritchie and others.
He traded Mike Santorelli and Cody Franson for Olli Jokinen, Brendan Leipsic and a first rounder which were flipped for picks that turned out to be Jeremy Bracco and Travis Dermott. Not bad.
He somehow got rid of Clarkson for Nathan Horton's contract creating tons of cap space.
So although not a stellar GM not JFJ stupid. |

This was Jarmo Kekalainen's idea.. All Nonis had to do was ask for approval.
Also, Nylander was ranked ahead of Ritchie, not that hard to do.

nonis was awful.
all those things were under shanny's supervision. he was a (frank)ing disaster before shanny got there.
and dermott/bracco had nothing to do with him. |

It wasnt an official max...and the cap has never been higher.
Its not about mcdavid, i get what you are saying and agree.
But the cap is at 85 million, matthews is superstar and basically the leafs future. A smart agent would ask for a percentage of the cap....like mcdavid agent did. |

Let's do a comparison, shall we?
1st year: both win the Calder Trophy.
2nd year: McDavid wins the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award.
Matthews wins a bowl of soup.
