Depends how the draft goes, too. If someone ends up freefalling down the draft board and they're there at, say, 19th overall...the Rangers have the assets to trade up and snag them. Pretty much exactly what the Isles did with Barzal, even though some of that move has to be attributed to Pete Chiarelli apparently huffing caustic chemicals before the draft that year.

If the Rangers think they can get a guy they have ranked higher than pick 26 in that spot, no reason to move up. It's so fluid that it's impossible to predict.

Yet, we will spend the next 38 days trying to. And (some of us will) become enraged when it doesn't go the way we expect.

No doubt about that. Certainly didn't think the Rangers would trade Stepan for the essentially the 7th overall pick last year (I think the other components pretty much cancelled each other out).

Who are your ideal back-to-back picks for the Islanders -- Veleno and Smith?

That's probably my favorite scenario. Wilde grew on me a bit, but he's a long-term project I think. I would be OK going F/F and taking Veleno and Kotkaniemi/Farabee also. Maybe Hayton, but I don't know if I really see him ever being a particularly dynamic player.

This is all assuming none of Dahlin/Svechnikov/Zadina/Hughes/Boqvist/Wahlstrom/Bouchard/Dobson/Tkachuk fall to 11 and/or 12.

He's a guy I'd like the Rangers to grab if he slides. He probably won't. At 9 I think he's a risk but at like 18 or 19, my ears would tingle.

Sleeper top 10 pick. Lots of hype around him as we're getting closer to the draft.

I would love to have him, but he would be a bit of a reach at 9. I don't think he would be there at 18 or 19, but you never know.

And, there does seem to always be one slider. I wonder who it will be this year. Maybe Boqvist, because of concussion uncertainty, and at least some, being a little underwhelmed by him.

One scout was trying to make a case for the Habs taking him in the Top 5. Read it recently but forgot where I saw it. That would be a major rise.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him sneak in there at all. 17 year old (not 18 until July) that was getting regular shifts in the Finnish league and playing on the PK. He seems like a really smart player. Good size, too. It sounds like the only real knock on him is his skating and that's fixable.

Other than his skating, my only real question is "is he a center or a wing?"

I think a riser up the board is good for the Rangers in the draft, insofar as they could either take the player if they love him or one of the commonly mentioned Top 8 could be there for them.

What number do you think Tkachuk is going to wear with the Rangers?

If Wahlstrom is gone, he is the guy I want. So many scenarios could play out in the next 38 days, almost impossible to predict what happens

That's the guy I was talking about earlier that had him going to Habs.

Edit: He as Boqvist, Bokk and Denisenko to the Rangers. I could live with that, except for them taking Boqvist over Hughes at 9.

I actually paid for a month of that guy's site last year. Not a particularly big fan of his rankings, but that's just my opinion. I've definitely seen him mocked on Twitter by other "prospect guys" for some of his rankings though.

Michigan-homer

I hope Bokk falls to the second round and the Isles scoop him. Doubtful though, he's got 5pts through 5gp at the WC's and I would imagine he doesn't make it that far.
