Meh. I don't think a 13 goal season warrants any more than $2-3M
- Feds91Stammer

With 38 points I think it does. We'll just see though because in 2 months we'll have a definitive answer

This year not so much. They do need to add some quality depth on defence but can probably maneuver that lightly.

The problem is that next year Jake will get $6M and they will have to figure out what to do with the 3C slot as Brassard will no longer be ultra cheap.

- MacPatty

you could probably get Jake at $5 and Brass at $6.5

Lose Hags, Sheary and the Cap increase over the next 2 seasons and it can be made to work

Gonna have to get Sprong to produce on a relatively cheap deal, Hope ZAR pans out, Rusty come in around 3mil on his next deal, Hunwick would be on the last year of his deal, could be dumped

The strength of the Pens has been their ability to bring guys up through the system who do just that. The problem is you will end up overpaying everyone if you pay according to stats.

Sheary put up one good season and they overpaid him. Rust had a solid regular season and has scored clutch goals in past playoffs. That being said, he is a 26 year old grinder who has yet to stay healthy for a full season. Anything more than $2M and I would cut ties.

- MacPatty

They didn't overpay Sheary. He's on a fair deal. He scored 18 goals and 30 points. His shooting percentage is still in line with his last few years. Given that he has 12 assists on the year, I would bet some of the problem with Sheary is guys aren't finishing their chances he's providing.

I really enjoyed watching Subban lose last night. He has so much skill but he seems like such an bumhole on the ice.
- Thorny87

It's kind of a shame. His play stands out itself but he feels the need to be a distraction to draw more attention on himself. The Crosby bad breath thing was just totally ridiculous and embarrassing. He is just way to contrived and it seems like being the center of attention is more important than winning to him.

What's going in the Pens' AHL system? I haven't been paying much attention to any players besides Sprong and the Goalies. Who else is coming up the ranks that can take up roles like Rust and Sheary did?
- chimpira

Adam Johnson has some hype, Simons gonna be the new Sheary, Heard soome things about Miletic, Blueger is still a wildcard

What do you mean?
- Feds91Stammer

He just really irks me. Started last year. He's a poop talking drama queen on the ice. He's done a lot of great things off the ice, it's his on ice behavior i dislike. I still think he's an amazing player, i just hate his attitude.

Show me the stats of the turnovers he commits and I definitely want them compared to better players.

He's not way worse defensively, that's just wrong. Is he as good defensively as Hagelin? No, never said he was hence "lite" used in his name.

- Rinosaur

I'm going eye test on turnovers. He's makes the type of hope passes our stars do except he doesn't get the points they do as a result.

https://www.naturalstattr...=&td=&tgp=82&lines=single

The above links to their advanced metrics. Hagelin is always better, sometimes a little, sometimes significant (scoring chances and corsi).

I'd give you similar value if you wanted to argue that, I just have to disagree on similar players.

23 years old (24 in a month). 31 points in 70 AHL games. No hype necessary for this one.

He was a signing out of College, 1st year in the AHL. Good shot and he's fast - Fits the bill for what the Pens look for on the cheap

I'm not sure why the word "lite" doesn't compute. It means to a lesser extend with similar attributes, not the same... I feel like you're making similar = same.

Sheary's speed, ability on zone-exits and entries and ability to create turnovers are SIMILAR to things Hagelin has, not the same and not as good. Hagelin is much better defensively along the boards, which I said was a weakness of Sheary.

I feel like this is an argument for the sake of argument right now.

Not much at WBS. Bluegger might be good as the 5C and become the 4C after Brassard leaves. Bengtsson has promise as a defenseman but keeps getting hurt. Haggerty had a breakout yeat offensively and is a well-rounded player (physical, fast, kills penalties) but that came in his 4th year so at best he's a capable 4th liner.

Bellerive might actually be a good player who had a monster jump offensively and just turned 19. Also plays with an edge. I probably rank him behind just Sprong and Jarry among our prospects although that says more about our farm system since I'm just hoping for a 3rd line center.

Militec also did but he was an overage so he could just be the next Dea who disappoints later but he'll be one to watch.

That's fair. I think Subban is a beast and a top 10 D in the league.

OK, we can just agree to disagree then. Sheary can do much of what you mentioned, I just view him as more an offensive guy and Hags as a two way (though not as good offensively).

Oh no, the NHL has a player with character. Whatever will they do? The NHL needs more Subbans in the league. That dude is awesome.

Rowney's contract is up, so he should be gone. I expect GMJR to give Hunwick a chance to rebound. Simon is okay, don't love him or hate him. I don't dislike Sheary like everyone else, but I do think he is the guy who gets moved.
- j.boyd919

Mostly hunwick and sheary are must moves if possible...i believe this will be hard to do. Hunwick is a complete waste and we clearly need better defence. It's the ONLY area (assuming Murray learns how to catch in the offseason) to improve this team. I'm not sure Shehan stays either honestly. I doubt 4th line center is where it's at for him in the nhl.

I'd not touch dumo, letang (could be talked into moving him easily) Schultz or oleziak. I love maata a lot and think his best days are soon to come....but gotta give to get.

The most realistic way I think it get rid of Hunwick without having take anything signficant back is if the Pens retained around 25 to 30% of the salary packaged with a late pick.

Did you read Hal Gill's Player Tribune article with his Subban story?

I was dying. I think PK is great for the game.
