I wouldn't be surprised if E Kane was a target of JR's. Extra cap space gives it legs & hes the type of player I think JR wants. I wonder what $ he's expecting?

I dunno why people think players can just come in and bang out 30-40 points. I don't think it works like that. There are a bunch of dummies (Mackey included) that think Sprong can replace Kessel's 90 point production. This team doesn't need drastic changes. They lost in the 2nd round in 6 games and had a bunch of injuries. A healthy team probably puts up a better fight.

To your other post, I also don't really get the hate for Sheary. Yeah, it's frustrating seeing him not score, but maybe I'm alone in the fact I feel like he's become Hagelin-lite. He does a lot of good things away from the puck to help generate chances and create turnovers. He's just not strong along the boards, that's pretty much it.
- Rinosaur

I really don't see that comparison. Sheary may do a few of the same things and is a better goal scorer, but he's way worse defensively and creates turnovers the other way too while Hags is a model of dependability defensively and an elite PKer.

Never said I wasn't a fan. As I said, he has been a great contributor to the team. I just think they have some players that could replace him on minimum contracts. I think ZAR can do everything Rust can do and he has a higher upside. The issue is that there is a salary cap and the Pens need to make some significant changes in the coming years.

They have +40% of their cap space tied up in 4 players. Every year is going to be a squeeze to make it under the cap with a championship caliber team. They are fortunate to have Jake and Brassard on discount contracts this year.

- MacPatty

That's most contenders. And the fact that they have the majority of players under contract makes the Pens situation that much easier. There is a salary cap and the Pens are in good shape, even in the coming years.

Would take an AAV of $6-7M. Makes 0 sense for PIT.

There is no need to free up cap space unless the intend on going after someone like Calvin De Haan.

That would be sweet though. I'm game.

He'd probably ask for $3M per and I'd counter offer with $2.5M max.
- Barnaby36

Don't forget you're getting into UFA years so cost will go up. I think Rust gets closer to 3.5M than 2.5M.

Shags only issue is his 4m. He's good PKer arguably our best, forechecks and drives hard. He doesn't score enough which will probably get worse but he's an asset.

Sheary is more like Nyquist lite, who is another guy that always gets blasted for his production.

At best he gets the same contract as Sheary imo.

I'll agree with that. He's slightly overpaid, but since it's a one year deal and they need space the following year for Jake it's not a bad contract for them to have.

This exactly, Pens don't need to dump salary.
- Tojo.

This year not so much. They do need to add some quality depth on defence but can probably maneuver that lightly.

The problem is that next year Jake will get $6M and they will have to figure out what to do with the 3C slot as Brassard will no longer be ultra cheap.

Show me the stats of the turnovers he commits and I definitely want them compared to better players.

He's not way worse defensively, that's just wrong. Is he as good defensively as Hagelin? No, never said he was hence "lite" used in his name.

I really enjoyed watching Subban lose last night. He has so much skill but he seems like such an bumhole on the ice.

If neither are scoring who would you rather have?

I might agree with you if he wasn't a year away from UFA. Off the year he had, Sheary gave them a bit of a discount for term which looked like a good call by him.

What's going in the Pens' AHL system? I haven't been paying much attention to any players besides Sprong and the Goalies. Who else is coming up the ranks that can take up roles like Rust and Sheary did?

Meh. I don't think a 13 goal season warrants any more than $2-3M
