So the whole "Let's not get hurt during the playoffs" thing was a lovers pact?

It's hard to praise the "genius" of a team going into the season with :

1. Their "top line centre" having never scored more than 15 goals in ANY professional league
2. Their starting goalie lost his job the past two years to a rookie
3. Their defense being made up of

The Caps 5/6 defender
The Bruins 5/6 defender
The Flames 7th defender
The Kings 5/6 defender
The freaking Canucks' 5/6 defender
A top prospect
A Devils castoff

4. The supposed top line centre bolted to Russia in 5 seconds
5. Every player not named James Neal having a career year

Schmidt last year in Washington already showed he was way more than a 5/6 defender, but a very very capable #3 D. (e.g. way better than our friend J.G.)

thats a big part of the reason I hope Dubas will be the next GM, they have put a good minor league system in place Solor Bears > Marlies > Leafs, and focused on drafting and developing. But I think they can take an even bigger step with Dubas in charge in regards to drafting, developing, identifying market weakness and relying heaving on stats and analytics. Not that Hunter would be bad, but there is a lot of questions on how London operates (not all on the up and up). Stuff is changing and I hope they put someone in place who looks ahead and not relying on old tired methods

Yep, need to develop at the lower levels I agree...not that big on Corsi etc....I don't find it's a true measure of a hockey player...it's just as bad as plus/minus when we judge a guy by what happens when 5 other guys are with them and different opponents etc....it's very premature in the collection of those stats to truly base talent on IMO

No way they sign Tavares, and JVR. They actually can't afford it. Take a look at their roster of RFA's, and UFA's

They have 11-12 RFA/UFA players who contributed this year, even if you let most of them go, the ones they will surely want to keep will take up 15M-20M

William Karlsson - 5M minimum
Collin Miller - 3M minimum
Shea Theodore - 2.5M minimum
Tomas Nosek - 1.5M Minimum
David Perron - 5M minimum
James Neal(Likely gone) 5M+

That would put them at 65.5M and they have other roster spots that need to be filled. Thats at minimum IMO.

I did the math above, you should check again.

48.5 currently allotted to the cap without any of those players I mentioned signed. I budgeted 17M(not including Neal) for those players which likely is low, and they have other roster spots to fill on top of that.

I think Perron is most likely gone unless he takes way less than that.

Neal... I don't know.... I think he's been a very important player for them this year but it's the kind of deal they souldn't make moving forward imo.
