I think they are being smart, why waste a year of controllability with this team who is not going to make the playoffs. Bring him in next year, and start the real retooling.

I like Nashville. Love their top-4 d, soft spot for Rinne and I really love Arvidsson. Quickly becoming one of my fav NHLers. A 5'9 Holmstrom mixed with the speed of Grabner? Love it.

it won't help next season at all, but Gardiner is a UFA after next season, so turning that into a top 10 pick is yuuuuuge

I would think it is more about saving face, and reluctance to admit they made a bone-headed penny-pinching move to sign Morales instead of Encarnacion. I also believe the revenue gained would be greater than any financial losses due to a year of eligibility.

If the Leafs have no intention of re-signing him to an extension, than getting a top 10 pick is a good return. If they do intend to re-sign him than you don't make that trade.

Don't forget Filip Forsberg (the two goals last night were beauty!) and they got him for two used condoms Martin Erat and Michael Latta from Washington. Would be great to see a Nashville vs Washington in the finals.

They've got some players I really like. Like Ellis (in my opinion, the most underrated d-man in hockey), Johansen, and Arvidsson. But I've never been a fan of Rinne and I can't cheer for Subban. Plus Emelin. (frank) him, too.
