And if this isn't the case, allocate it somewhere else. Not for an unproven commodity.

Like acquiring a proven top 6 forward via F/A. Honestly, I wonder who will actually be available though by the time F/A comes about.
Perron, Neal, JVR, Kovy,

Lord no. No more significant UFA contracts; maximum 3 years for any UFA excluding a rare exception like a Stralman or Niskanen (puck moving D with less mileage and great underlying numbers).

Could anyone better been had for less? Montoya and Brossoit certainly weren’t the answer.
- Wildschwein

We could try to get a guy like Halak on a one year show me deal... but our luck he would be lights out and Chia would sign him to a dumb contract he'd never live up to.

I'd be fine with it as long as the term is small too. Would love to try to lure Ilya here.... that would be awesome. Unless the NYR rumors are true.

If you can find an intermediary team to retain some extra salary, you could potentially market him as a solid option at 4.5mil per year. I imagine you could find a taker or two that he would agree to playing for and doesn't have a lot of worry about the impending expansion draft (Vancouver comes to mind). Something like Lucic with 750k retained by us to a cap floor team who then retains 750k and moves on to hometown Vancouver (who he was close to signing with) for a pick or middling prospect (let's say Gadjovich if you're lucky, likely lesser) and then you send that intermediary team a pick for futures.

If Phaneuf can be moved twice than Russell could as well

Russell is a unique case due to his NMC and his desire to stay in Alberta (due to his farm, I believe). The only way he moves is if the verbal out off Calgary is true and they would want him back at a lower cap hit. All that was said of him on his way out in 2016 was positive and made it sound like they valued him- they just couldn't afford his reported asking price of 5 mil/year. If they might take him back at ~3.5mil after moving Brodie, that's the only way other than a rebuild that I think he's leaving Edmonton.

Good luck with signing any significant UFA for less than 5 years. Aside from Kovy, no one at the top of the UFA window is gonna take 3 years.

That's who I would target honestly. Something similar to Radulov with regards to term/money?

Pretty mediocre career numbers in a inferior league.
now we gotta clear money elsewhere to add/resign for our other needs as the cap is tight
The 1 year makes it easier to deal with I guess , but it’s a gamble and not fantastic asset management for a totally unproven guy

It’s not awful but it ain’t great either

Seems like a reasonable bet. Takes a one year deal with a team and then cashes in on a longer term again.

Who is the KHL's version of Milan Lucic? We'll sign him instead, all part of the plan

Will be interesting to see what kind of term he gets figuring it’ll be a guaranteed contract.

That’s abit of a steep term. I’d be super apprehensive

Don’t doubt he could get it if he wanted tho
