If the Sens trade Karlsson it makes great sense to include Toronto and Montreal in any discussions. However, Montreal is in rebuild mode and it makes no sense for them to exhaust young assets trying to catch a last playoff spot.

The Sens are looking at full rebuild and fans will switch over quickly to supporting a young team that has strong potential. Ottawa has seen this before and everyone loves a young team. Not winning is tolerable, even fun, if kids are playing exciting hockey.

I think Edmonton has the best shot. Some variation of Draisaitl (or Nugent-Hopkins), 1st round pick and a prospect. I think Karlsson would jump at the chance to line up with McDavid. I think the NHL as a whole would be highly supportive of this match up.

Several other teams can probably come up with a similar offer. Probably need to involve a third team. A sure signal that Karlsson is being traded is if a 3rd team acquires the 2nd, 3rd or 5th pick (Carolina, Montreal or Arizona). Will be hard for Ottawa to say "no" to a shot at another top 5 pick.

If I was looking for the most probable outcome in terms of an exotic three way it would involve LA Kings (Karlsson), Leafs (Doughty) and Sens (Player, top 5 pick and prospect).

This is an outstanding draft with elite talent available in the first 8-9 picks. Wahlstrom at 7th is a huge talent. Dobson is going to be an outstanding NHL Dman. Watch to see if he can climb in the rankings if he is able to lead his club to a Memorial Cup.

There is huge flexibility for teams to find the basis for highly creative deals and it is great fun to speculate on the options.

This reminds me of when everyone wrote off Ovechkin after a couple of down years (scoring 32 and 38 goals or something...pffft). I think he was also about Karlsson's age. What happened? OV8 went on to have three straight 50 goal seasons, and scored 32 in 48 games in the strike season...EK65 has another two Norris trophies in him for sure.

Yes. Karlsson struggled in first half of last season. Rehab on his foot was slow and it affected his skating. Second half he was back to full speed but the season was already pretty much baked.

There is no healing of the rift between Karlsson and Melnyk. Too many stories about Melnyk making too many critical comments. Karlsson only stays if Melnyk goes and I fear it will not be soon enough. The Melnyk/Karlsson feud is essentially a continuation of the Melnyk/Alfredsson feud.

I believe Melnyk is on his way out. However, it is taking time. All we can do is hope to make the right decisions to keep the long term damages to a minimum.

Not like it's going to happen, but a trade that could benefit all teams (*trade is in terms of value)

To Ottawa
Shea Weber (6m next 4 years: 3m in 5th year)
Erik Gudbranson OR Chris Tanev
7th overall (Adam Boqvist or Noah Dobson)

To Montreal
Marian Gaborik (1.2m buyout)
Erik Karlsson
4th overall pick (Brady Tkachuk)

To Vancouver
Bobby Ryan
Alex Burrows (comes back to finish career/contract off the books this year)
2nd overall pick

He was getting close to full speed. You could see it in the way he was almost catching the forwards who blew past him when he made another stupid play and got caught on the wrong side of the play going the other way.

Haha, oh Ek.

I think it would be more straightforward for Melnyk to just fold the franchise and save himself all this pesky player salary.

If NHL Executives ever figure out who Ek really is, do you think they will stop giving him insider information.

Ottawa can keep Karlson. I would sooner take Weber if Habs keep a bit of salary. Putting him with Reilly would be a good shutdown pair but Habs would have to take picks, roster players (like Leivo, Carrick, Johnsson, Martin) and prospects not named Liljgren.

Damn, I WAS kinda hoping he'd end with with Toronto. Now that Eklund says it's a possibility it can't possibly be in the cards.

Vancouver gets nothing here but a good winger prospect. Good wingers can be found all over the draft board, especially if the team has patience. What they need is a premier center....that's not happening in the first round this year.

Ottawa gets an expensive aging, injury prone defensemen, moves BACK 3 slots, and gets a 4-5 d-man...they're rebuilding....this won't fly at all

Montreal wins here all day long! Move's back only one spot, gets EK65, and maybe 15-20 goals out of an aging inexpensive Gaborik....

Sorry man I just don't see it....

Weber's on the decline & Montreal is rebuilding....Montreal would jump at a Leivo, Carrick, Johnson, Martin trade....won't happen tho

No. No they most definitely would not jump at any of those players for Weber.
