Despite the Leafs off season goal to bring in a top defenseman in order to be a top NHL power force, Pierre LeBrun said today on TSN in Montreal in regards to the Tavares situation, that if reaching the open market, he "can't rule out the Leafs surprising us with a bid for Tavares". He added that he "knows for a fact that the Sharks will be in the bidding", and expects the Golden Knights would be in as well.
If that's true, then Bozak and Van Riemsdyk will not be re-signed, among two of their free agents.
NBC Sports reports that two Denver Post writers debated the possibility of the Avs also being interested in Tavares, in addition to Flyers ownership giving Hextall the right to spend money this off season. They also reported that both Malkin and Hagelin will miss Game 1 of the Penguins 2nd Round series against the Capitals.

Grabner sucked on the leafs and almost everyone here lost their ever loving minds when he signed with the Rangers. That turned out pretty well. Kovi hasn't played an NHL game in 5 years.

My view is Toronto gets one more year to use the banner, "they are a young team," before the criticism and scrutiny begins. Could say it for sure last year. This season, they brought in Patrick Marleau to give the team a veteran presence. But lost to what I think is a better team. Toronto needs a better backup to Frederik Andersen, one that will challenge him for playing time, and a real solid, physical defensive defenseman. Auston Mathews had a lousy series. Despite all this, they went into the third period of Game 7 with a one-goal lead. Experience, home ice advantage and a better overall team drove the win for Boston.
