I'd like to remind you that Shea Weber, when acquired, was considered an over the hill grandpa at 31. - Scabeh

The leafs are 6th overall in the league......
Ummm
Are we waiting until they are 2nd overall to "contend"? - Fakepartofme
It is pretty funny how everyone is banking on Liljegren being a star.
He is the only Leafs d prospect not in the NHL that has a chance of becoming a top 4 d. 1st round picks aren't even close to sure things.
So apperently our d sucks but when it suggested the Leafs try to improve in that area, they arent allowed to trade anything over Leivo and a 6th.

I'm not sure I'd rank mcdonagh over Gardiner anymore. Maybe two years ago. But not the way Gardiner has been playing the last 25 games |

Uneducated.
Compared to what you gave up and the physical miles on shea....was mostly the argument - Fakepartofme
I'm not debating the Weber trade, we've talked about it enough.
Point is, McDonagh at 28 will still be very good for a long time, just like Weber or other very good defensemen around 30 years old. |

cool, I don't care when he turns 29. He is 28.
And huh? Gone? If the Leafs acquire him im sure they will have full intent to try and resign him and would make sure Mcdonaugh has interest as well before making the trade - Santo_44
...and if you read my post, you will see that he will either be gone, or signed to a bloated long term contract.

No way does Toronto pay that kind of price for McDonough. Lil, Kap and a first? Not gonna happen. They'll go after Hjallmarsson first, he'll cost far less and give the Leafs a similar player with far less offense. They don't need offense though, so that will do for them - Falon
Hjarlmason is not even close to being on Mcdonagh's level
He is not similar at all. |

Ummm....everyone of our prospects are gonna be stars.
Its gonna be a rude awakening for some once the leafs are pressed up against cap and we start turning over our prospects every few years.....well if we draft well. |

50 point pace....22.30 atoi....on for more goals for than against.....his numbers stack up very favourably to Mcds.
The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Plus the faster the game is and less time jake has to think...Ie playoffs. The better he is. |

...those are the only two options. This isnt rocket science. He would either ride out the contract like JVR OR they would resign him...... |

I guess I shouldn’t say anything negative about McDonagh ability age etc cuz I’ve never watched him play. Anyone on this site watched him or ranger fans that can tell us about him your opinion? Who could he be compared to? |

"he'll be 29 in a few months, by the time the leafs are ready to contend in a couple years he will either be gone, lost for nothing, or resigned to a bloated contract and on the steep slope down."
Apparently it is rocket science. I for one, would like to know how you know that he will be on a steep slope down and will sign a bad contract. Please, enlighten us.
When will Matthews hit a wall and decline fast? 25? 34? 40? |

We need plekanec as a cheap rental. You can have him back after the playoffs - Aetherial
can't happen.
first Plekanec in a Leafs jersey would cause me to yack.
second, and more important... Lou won't allow beards, mustache or turtleneck |

It's really not all about numbers. I'm not a big stats guy, but he isn't being used as #1 dman on a pretty terrible team like the Rangers so I would assume situationally they are used much different which does not help Mcd.
Do you think the Rangers would take Gardinder straight up for him? And if they would you would sit here and say no? I find that very hard to believe. |
