But...there is no real proof the IOC is losing money because of not having the NHL'ers there. they're saving huge cash from not paying the insurance for sure.
Even with the NHL'ers there, viewership would have been down, time difference. The NHL knew that....IOC knew that.
But hockey is a small part of the Olympics......the only reason the NHL'ers will head back to the Olympics will have nothing to do with viewers for these games. It will be because the Olympics will be in a time zone that will have games on closer to primetime for sponsors etc. - Fakepartofme
I think you're overstating the amount of money they're losing because of lack of NHLers. It applies to Canada and the USA for sure (in varying degrees), but supporters for the other countries that participate care very little if there's NHLers or not. |

TV revenue is down man. Pretty quantifiable. Here's 5 apples, I'm going to take away 3 of them. See how that works?
And the IOC never paid the insurance, that's the whole problem. It's not like they were and now that they're not, they're saving it. They never did. That's why the NHL is like (frank) you.
The Olympics are all kinds of crooked bullpoop. The NHL is a for-profit megacorp, but at least they're transparent about it: the Olympics, not so much. |

maybe not, but it would have been nice to be in the gold medal game against the country formerly known as Russia. |

The women were outplayed drastically...watching the 3rd and OT....I was surprised the game was even tied.
The men, I was hoping they would make it to the gold medal game.

If you have a Datsyuk AND a Kovalchuk compared to a Kozun/Wilson, Goc/Muller, etc you should be the most embarrassed if you lose. |

From the 2nd period through to OT they were though. They made Canada look realllly slow + Canada was playing dump and chase on the 4 on 4 for some reason - markmark
I do feel they tried to protect their lead and stopped pushing forward way early and it ended up costing them. You could see it coming for a while.
This being said, they're not the first team or the last to make that mistake. It was still a very solid effort and the game could have gone either way. |

3 rd and overtime... Canada shortened the bench and took all their speed off the ice. |
