None of the shootings have been done with a full-auto rifle - nyrangers9479
No, but the Vegas shooter used a bump stock which is pretty much a $20 piece of plastic that makes it full-auto. How bump-stocks and slide-fire mechanisms were ever legal is utterly astounding. |

Illegally yes. Just like anything.
Legally you have to get a special permit, go through a crazy backround check and then spend probably upwards of 50k. So basically no one would do it. - mdw7413
What did the Vegas shooter use to soup of his guns?

these weapons that let you change magazines on the fly, where one person can shoot round after round in a matter of seconds, if you wanna convince me you guys need that kind of firepower to shoot Bambi I am a little skeptical - jimbo83
The Virginia tech shooter used a 9mm and 22 pistol and killed 32. You can unload and reload a pistol just as fast. |

Seriously though, I'm all for severely restricting the ability to own AR-15's, even as a gun owner. Anyone who says that they "need" one to hunt is absolutely full of shit. You don't need a semi-automatic rifle to hunt any big game, nor will you kill most big game with the standard 5.56/.223 round that the majority of AR's are chambered in.
There is only one civilian use that I believe AR's are necessary for, and that's ridding farmland of feral hogs. Those things do such a massive amount of damage to crops and reproduce exponentially and having a rifle capable of multiple shots in quick succession is pretty vital to being able to cull them properly.
I don't see any reason you couldn't strongly regulate and issue licenses to people who need them for this purpose and qualify to own one. Otherwise, nobody on earth really needs one of those rifles. - eichiefs9
There are over 300 million of them out there, what percentage of them do u think are used in crimes?

Bump stock which I think should be illegal. No reason for it |

Except there is a way around even that, isn't there?
And all you have to do is read the history of the AR to realize what it's purpose is. It serves none, other than to inflict maximum possible damage on another person. It's not a hunting rifle. It's not a defensive weapon. What it is the preferred weapon of mass shooters, because it now has become a game amongst these guys to try to beat the previous body counts, with that weapon being best situated to do it. - Pete V
Any good mechanic / engineer / hand person can adjust anything to make it automatic.....

You know, there really is a reasonable middle ground here. It's just (frank)ing sad that we are so entrenched we can't get there.

I don't really care what percentage of them are used in crimes, to be honest.
What percentage of Muslims are terrorists? What percentage of Mexicans are dangerous criminals? I get the feeling that you don't feel the same way about those small percentages. |

I really didn't want to talk about this..
Why is no one saying anything about the cops who showed up at his house like it was a donut shop and never seized his weapon. Or the FBI ignoring 2 tips after he posted he was going to be a school shooter? Maybe if the authorities did their job it could have been stopped. |
