5 or 6 would make sense. I'd say make it 5 for UFA and 6 for players currently with their team.

Soooooo he could be boeser #2 ? No pressure. But he’s got to see all this going on.
- canucksfan1944

He has made reference to how Brock has transitioned to nhl and hopes he can follow suit.

Make them all 3, ELCs are 3. If they are going to be guaranteed they should all be 3, no front loading and stop allowing teams loop holes, have a strict cap.

If the length of contracts were to be changed, you could be ending up where ELC length also changes, more than likely downward and players would be hitting free-agency even sooner.

How is gaudettes competition co pare to Brock’s when he was in school?
- canucksfan1944

NCAA is different than other leagues in that it is made up of a bunch of different conferences, each with vastly different quality of programs. There is less interconference play between conferences than in the CHL leagues. For example Gaudette's Northeastern has only played 8 of 25 games out of conference this year.

North Dakota, Boeser's team, is one of the best programs and has recently been playing in the recently made "super conference" of only 6 teams I believe and they play a lot more out of conference matches.

In short it's complicated to compare competition in the NCAA.

Making the Allstars is a league bonus not against the cap.
- Nighthawk

Yes, there is a NHL paid bonus but in Brock's contract are a few clauses that he gets 225k (or so) for each of the following ....at 20 goals, all-star selection, all-star MVP, top 6 in forward minutes on the team.

All said he can get almost another million in bonuses from the canucks regardless of anything the nhl pays him which includes an all-star bonus and bonuses for wining awards at the end of the year.

The maximum bonus he can earn is 850K, so he can only earn another 212.5K

It will be money well spent for this organization that has spent millions foolishly.
I am sure he will be taking care of his family well.

Definitely, it's about time we had a prospect who could earn his bonuses.

👍
All contracts should have some bonus structure to them, not just ELC and 35+ contracts. Forces players too perform well consistently and GMs would have to be monitoring cap space when you have a team underperforming(not hitting bonuses) so that they don't go below the cap floor.

Agreed. Gary came on to basically feed the Calgary fans the message that they somehow can't afford it, so that fans will put the pressure on the mayor. Greedy little troll bettman rep's those billionaires to a tee
- neem55

thats his job to do exactly that. He doesn't rep morals or taxpayers, he reps the owners interests and the owners are the league.

We can hate him but the reality is that he is very good at his job which he does to a T. If he had a different job maybe he wouldnt seem like such an Ahole.

It's the players, they get 5-8 year contracts that are guaranteed they don't have to play their best every year, eg. Evander Kane he's playing much better because he's looking for a guaranteed payday and then he will coast for the next few years. Take away the guaranteed contracts and these guys will pick up their game and the entertainment value will increase.
- A_SteamingLombardi

Ive always thought that performance based contracts would be best. Every player gets the same base pay then its all performance based from there. Whatever the performance stats are for your position or type of play.

On the front line of the next battle between owners and the NHLPA is length of contract. NHL pushing for 5. I think 6 would be fair but only a small number of players are signed to contracts longer than 5 and so few more than 6 currently... not sure how much of a compromise it is for either side at 6.
- boonerbuck

8 is currently the top allowable. It must be a franchise player at that. I believe there is a limit of 1-2 players allowable at 8 years.
Not sure what the next longest allowable is.

Im pretty content with this as allowable term.

Speaking of Brock, seems like it was some geezer 80 year old scout and Ryan Johnson that really pushed the team to draft him, according to Friedman. Brackett gets a lot of love for the pick, but he may not have been the main guy pushing to draft him:

Looking back at the 2015 draft, most teams concede the Canucks rated Boeser higher than anyone else. Regional scout Ted Hampson and current director of player development Ryan Johnson pushed hardest. Hampson handles Minnesota — where Boeser is from — and Johnson went to NCAA North Dakota, Boeser’s college choice. I’m not sure Vancouver was worried anyone would take him earlier than 23rd, but the Wild made them a bit nervous because it was his home state. This has turned out to be a huge steal for them.

I wonder if Friedman can find out which scouts pushed for Jake over Ehlers/Nylander.

(Insert Aquilini joke here)
