He wasn't though, He inherited all of it. Here's a list of all of his trades, which player make him a "large part"? http://www.nhltradetracke...st_by_GM/Craig_Button/164

Info on Button:
He replaced Al Coates as the Vice President and General Manager of the Calgary Flames in 2000. Button held that position until the conclusion of the 2002β03 NHL season, when his contract was not renewed and was replaced with Darryl Sutter who Button had hired as Head Coach in December 2002. During the 2003β04 NHL season the Flames made it to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Button is credited with building this team by acquiring many of the players instrumental in the Flames success, Craig Conroy, Martin Gelinas and Jordan Leopold and others. He was a guiding force for the Flames' primary development team Saint John Flames of the American Hockey League when they captured the Calder Cup championship in 2001. After his departure from the Flames he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2004 as a scout.
Agree no GM is responsible for all acquisitions but I will respectfully digress here. MANY pieces weren't in place for Button when he got to Calgary to make that cup run. Sutter took much credit for it but in 'large part' it really belongs to Button. I'm sure the previous GM had assets in place too but Just food for thought here. Only thing Sutter did that was any good was steal a 3rd string goalie out of SJ in Kipprusoff and got him to be a beast in Calgary. But it is what it is.
So having added Conroy, Gelinas, Leopold, Mcammond, Donovan, Ference, Drury, Yelle...and a few others isn't a 'large part'...lol
