Burke remembers interviewing Number 68 (through a translator) during Jagr’s 1990 draft year in a hotel room in Prague. The executive was with the Vancouver Canucks at the time.
Jagr had never been a captain of a hockey team.
Burke says that’s “a huge red flag” for a star prospect. When Burke asked him why he’d never been a captain, Jagr said it’s because he’d always played with guys three years older than him.
“That’s the only good answer to that question in the history of pro sports,” Burke said. “We agonize over a guy playing up [an age group] one year in Canada. He played up three years.”
Burke’s Canucks opted to take Petr Nedved second overall. Jagr went fifth to Pittsburgh. Burke said Jagr would’ve gone first overall, but the Czech government maintained the young player still owed two years of military service.
“Pittsburgh is rumoured to have made some financial arrangement with the Czech government,” Burke said, “and Jaromir never served in the military.”
Nedved had a good career, cheapass Quinn ruined his time in Vancouver but the returns he got were pretty hard to argue with, however, Jagr would've been pretty awesome!!

91 Steven Stamkos - 1st overall 1st rnd Tampa
86 Nikita Kucherov - 58th overall 2nd rnd Tampa
90 Vladislav Namestnikov - 27th overall 1st rnd Tampa
21 Brayden Point - 79th overall 3rd rnd Tampa
17 Alexander Killorn - 77th overall 3rd rnd Tampa
77 Victor Hedman - 2nd overall 1st rnd Tampa
37 Yanni Gourde - free agent signing (1st NHL team)
98 Mikhail Sergachev - traded 3rd overall 1st rnd Drouin Tampa for him
18 Ondrej Palat - 208th overall 7th rnd Tampa
9 Tyler Johnson - free agent signing (1st NHL team)
Andrei Vasilevskiy starting goaltender 19th overall 1st rnd Tampa
Just looking at Tampa's lineup, top six in scoring all Tampa draft picks and only one player was drafted by another team in their top ten. He was acquired through trading a 3rd overall pick in Drouin for. Plus their starter is their own 1st round pick.
Pretty great team thus far right there. Top three rounds have been good for them! |

That's only over a 10 year period. Rebuild over.
Also Van should trade them Tanev for Howden, Hajek, Thomas. |

To be fair, Stamkos was drafted nine years ago, not ten. Secondly, they went to the finals three years ago, so six years really, they just kept drafting well when the opportunity presented itself.
Rebuilding takes awhile, it is what it is |

Yzerman and Co. are bloody well deadly at drafting. Those Mofo's can pick. That's why we should sell Tanev to them for a bunch of their prospects. They have so many. |

Buffalo is looking for help on D. Stecher will be back soon. Tanev back soon. Snow angel is already back. Think Buffalo would take Biega? for a 4th rounder of course.
Also
Nikita Soshnikov is at practice with the Toronto Maple Leafs and has been called up to replace Frederik Gauthier. Today is when Soshnikov’s KHL out-clause kicks in, meaning he would have to be called up or risk him going back to Russia. While it doesn’t seem like Soshnikov is itching to leave North America, it’s an easy call-up to make at this point. Interestingly though, if Soshnikov plays three more games in the NHL he will lose his waiver-exempt status.
Could we get Sosh +(2nd and 4th) for Guddy? |

Sure there is some detail room to be finalized and bonuses cover it. Did you notice JB gave Molino the top contract salary rate to entice to sign. - Nuck4U
Top NHL salary, but zero bonuses and now he's making $70k and likely heading to a very small second contract. When it comes to ELC's its all about the bonuses since salaries are capped |

It's hard to move Tanev as he's always hurt. I don't honestly think JB has the balls to pull it off if Tanev has a string of healthy games. Really hoping Tanev is gone for assets at TDL.

Dont know much about Sosh, but dont they have an analytics guy (Dubas?) still over in TO? I would guess Gudbranson is a Lou-type player but not sure how much influence that young guy has on the roster. I'd accept your deal for Gudbranson though, sight-unseen on the 'prospect' too |

I think trading Tanev adds a year or two to a rebuild but at the same time is he ever going to be healthy enough when they need him to be. |

Sosh undrafted player they brought over. Is supposed to be "the best player every night" for the Marlies team so far this year.
14 points in 67 career games in the nhl. He's a bottom 6 that enjoys playing in the corners. |

Horvat could be considered the start of the rebuild (hypothetically) he was only picked four years ago, four years and four months to be precise Vantel lol, so they've got a ways to go yet. Tanev will be a UFA when the team is good again. |

I think Virtanen was. Van still had Luongo after Schneider was traded. The team finished 24th that year when Bo was drafted.
Virtanen year team finished 6th last, had to trade away Kesler. So 3 years in. 3 More years till the cup!
I'll start planning the parade |

They've assembled some nice 'maybe's' to go with Horvat and Boeser so here's to hoping Demko, Juolevi, Pettersson, Lind & Gadjovich turn out and they continue to build with some high picks and collect more 2nd rounders. |

It's almost as if stockpiling 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks seems like a good idea and that top-5 picks are valueable. I'll send JB a memo. |

I prefer to think of the "maybe's" as complimentary players to some higher skilled guys like Pettersson and this years drafted player whoever that is.
Seen guys like Lucic and Maroon play with better skilled players. Hyman and Brown complimenting Matthews, Nylander, Marner.
Brown to Kopitar.
Gadjovich Pettersson Boeser - Potential first line.
_____ Horvat Lind - second line
Virtanen Gaudette Palmu -third line
Gaunce _______ Dorsett.
Just have to trade Sutter, Baertschi, LE, Granlund, I have faith in JB. |

I highly doubt this. Maybe in a Maroon type role to free up space, but not a fast enough player I don't think to keep up with those two. No Dahlen? Good chance Gaudette converts to wing. |

Dahlen can slot in on the second line beside Horvat and Lind.
I would take Gadjovich 40 points a year to protect EP

he's played wing quite a bit in the NCAA and we need top6 wingers at this point. He's not looking like a bottom 6 guy IMO, needs more icetime. |

Really? I guess I don't see anything but highlights but usually on the game sheet he is listed as the center and most of the highlights have him taking the face-off. I don't see him being more then a good 3rd liner. |
