The leafs are going nowhere near the second round this season, and will only have one final season to take advantage of Matthews and Marner's low Cap hit ELCs to take a shot at the Cup, in next year's playoffs.

If they don't win the Cup next year, and then have to sign long term expensive contracts to these two, toronto could end up like the Blackhawks after they inked their two big name players to big money long term contracts.

But you are right... it is much better to have no young stars, just oft-injured, overpaid vets, a poopty farm system, no fans tens of millions in unmovable salary and still somehow be a bottom feeder.

Another top notch performance from Steady Freddy. Even with all the young talent up front the Leafs only go as far as Andersen can take them with the defence constructed as it currently is.
