The Oilers made a move (as you describe) to acquire Larsson. Not sure if was for the better or not, seeing how they're struggling this year.
But you have to admit, IF the leafs were to make a trade, in order to fill a "need", they would most certainly trade a forward, as that is where they have the most depth, and to get a "need" you would have to trade something of value, to get something of value in return. - D0PPELGANGER
It is a tough call. If they trade Marner or Nylander I would expect equal potential and age in a Dman and I still not sure I want that deal (nor do I think that deal is out there right now)
In a cap world though, you might have to wait for your own Dmen to develop so you can afford a team. The core is young enough that they can afford to wait.
What I could see is a trade for a 4-6 Dman for some of their forward depth. I could also see Gardiner gone as his new deal comes the same year as Matthews and Marner.
So, next season, I could imagine Gardiner + forward depth for an upgrade on D... very similar to the Sens dealing Turris + for an upgrade at center.
In the meantime, as long as the Leafs stay in the playoff hunt, I think JVR and Bozak are going nowhere. They will walk for nothing or sign for cheap in the off-season. |

So are you saying there are no "needs" on the leafs roster? - D0PPELGANGER
No, he is saying that the biggest "need" is time for players to develop, mature and commit to a team defense.
When the Leafs actually are legitimate contenders, and not just "hey let's get in the playoffs and hope", then you address what you really need.
It is too soon now.

pretty much my thoughts also.
I think the Leafs D troubles are a tad overstated. If they (or any team for that matter) get reliable goaltending, at or above league average..a lot of those problems go away.
this team is high event, they give up chances but they get a lot and over time that favours them. Also you have to think somewhere along the line, soon hopefully a top 4 D prospect develops. I mean other teams do it..just a little patience |

So are you saying there are no "needs" on the leafs roster? - D0PPELGANGER
every team has needs....except maybe tampa. im saying they shouldnt trade youth (specifically the top ones on the current roster) for needs. Not at this stage of their rebuild and development. If they can fill a need by trading a Leivo, for example, thats fine.

"In one breath, Belleville Senators coach Kurt Kleinendorst labels Thomas Chabot as “a Michelangelo” for his offensive artistry.
A minute or so later, Kleinendorst describes the Ottawa Senators’ 20-year-old defence prospect as a “left-shot Erik Karlsson” because of his ability to create plays that few others can." - spatso

He may end up being a great player.
But at least one Sens fan is behaving like Leafs fans overhyping the kid. Actually, it is worse than that. I don't recall a Leafs fan proclaiming that we had the 2 best players not in the NHL... while one of them was in the NCAA and the other was in the Q

Good interview on TSN 1200, yesterday, with the play by play guy for the Belleville Sens. He was asked about how Chabot has been doing in the AHL, and said he is "Uber Skilled" but is still learning how to play the pro game. Spends a lot of time with the coaching staff reviewing video and is seriously working on his weak areas.
I've heard, and talked with so many Sens fans that wanted him called up, and given a top 4 D spot, and have the Sens get rid of player X, to make room for him. These fans are idiots, who see other young D men, on other teams step into the NHL and do well .............. so logically they think anyone can.
Chabot has been told he's up as an injury replacement, and will be sent back down once the injured D man is ready to return .................. so if he wants a NHL job bad enough, he has been handed an opportunity, and if he shows he's ready, he may stick around, and take Wideman's spot on the third pairing, and get some PP time ........... if not, he's back down to develop some more.
BTW Cody Ceci was "brought up" in a very similar situation, in 2013-14, after playing 27 games in the AHL that season, and never was sent back down because he took control of the situation and showed he was a NHL player ................ so anything is possible, but if you asked me, I feel Chabot should spend more time in the AHL, and in the long run, he and the team will be better off in the long run.
Does anyone know how many games a "rookie" has to play in the NHL, to have one off his years, on his ELC "burned off"?

Leafs extend their lead over the sens by earning a sens point. defense has been solid lately. great night for hockey. scoreboard results and standing matter. so too, when convenient to sens fans, point % and goal differential. |

Yes, Ottawa fans are brimming over with confidence. It
is not their normal nature. Leafs fans, on the other hand, tend to celebrate the potential of success only to succumb to the disappointment of failure. Maybe this is the year Leaf fans will keep expectations inside the realm of reasonable hope.
Colorado announcer got everybody excited when he said that very few teams could match the firepower of the Senator power play including Duchene, Stone, Hoffman, Brassard and Karlsson. It was a lethal unit in Stockholm.
