everyone will look at it differently.

i see 9 of the current playoff teams above the line; based on point %.

by game 30, i'd expect that number to rise to 12 or so.

by the end of the year, only 2-3 teams below the line should be playoff teams.

so i'd expect some of bos, mtl, edm and cal to move up to playoff positions. some of col, NJ, vegas and ott to fall out by the early december.

Friedman' latest article doe:

29. Regular readers of this blog know I keep a Nov. 1 stat. Since 2005-06, six of 48 teams that were at least four points out after games played on that date came back to make the playoffs (This excludes lockout-shortened 2012-13). There were no contenders last season, as the late start from the World Cup put nobody in that position. This year, six will try and beat the odds: Arizona, Buffalo, Edmonton, Florida, Minnesota and Montreal.

Basically, it's rare for more than 1 team to climb out of that hole, let alone 3.

Mcdavid and price makes me think they'll be a 7th to add to Friedman's list.

A lot of people had Minnesota making the playoffs too so it looks like they'll be at least 1 disappointment between those 3, likely 2 based on recent history.

oilers and habs have pretty low pdo. they should bounce back.

Agreed. Wild have been kinda (frank)ed by injuries though, Granlund missed the start of the season, No Parise or Coyle. Dubnyk will bounce back for them too. But they rode a high PDO last year so they were overrated.

Oilers make it imo, Habs are going to be in tough, but they'll definitely end up fighting for a wildcard spot.

I've often heard of the stat of teams in a playoff spot at US Thanksgiving, and how rarely any team, that is not in a PO spot, is able to crack into one, over the rest of the season.

I've always thought that the problem wasn't so much about a team running out of time to come back. It was more that the deserving teams have already separated themselves from the pack by then.

I think for teams like Edmonton, and possibly Montreal (if their goaltending is outstanding) they are good enough to be a playoff team, they just had a rough start. Those are teams I could see coming back.

Tom Pyatt.

He and Pageau along with Nate Thompson are huge favorites of Boucher. still have not figured out Boucher. He is quirky and believes that you need four good lines and they will win you games.

Colin White is rounding into form. He scored a goal and had seven shots on goal last night. Sens management are raving about his 200' play. They are either getting ready to bring him up or they are doing some prospect polishing around a possible trade for a power forward.

i believe this is Melnyk's final year as an owner and the Sens will be all in before the season ends.

that is quirky. most teams believe having 4 bad lines helps you win games.

going all in is the only thing the makes sense for the sens right now. that half assed move they pulled with duchene doesn't move the needle.

I don't hate the move for Ottawa. I think it is a significant upgrade on offense. Could be a better move than we think if Duchene is really a different player than what he showed in Colordao.

Will he fit into the system better than Turris? Ottawa's success is very much based on everyone buying into and playing their system.

They paid a significant price in futures for that upgrade. It makes sense for a team that is all-in this year. I just don't think they are all that close to being a real contender.

if they straight up added duchene and kept turris; then i think they would be a contender in the east.

swapping turris/duchene keeps them as an also ran in the east to the pens and bolts.

Mark Stone has another huge game today. Also becoming more of a team leader. Nobody in the league plays a better checking game in the offensive zone. His hard work is a model for every guy on the ice.

The "futures" are the 28th pick overall last spring ........... remember, you made a big deal about it. If you look back over previous drafts, you'd have to go to 2006, to recognize a name that was selected 28th overall.

The third pick this coming draft was the price paid to Colorado to take Hammond of Ottawa's books, so well worth the price.

The first pick this coming draft hopefully will be the 31st.......... or another high 20's pick ........... not a "significant price" imo

Well then you would be the only person who doesn't think so. Literally every analysis I have heard says the price for the upgrade was significant.

Good lord, You Sens fans are really getting carried away.

Going to be so sweet to see your team not win, again. Core gets older, bad contracts, big salaries coming up, trading away picks and young players.

To be fair, they should get a good haul for the future 50 goal scorer stone; once they realize they can't afford him.
