The ECHL has a salary cap of $12,400 a week, meaning the average player salary is roughly $550 a week.

AMac is a middle of the road D man who has stretches of both strong and poor play. He is probably making 1.5 mil more a year than he should however. I can't believe people are still discussing him ad nauseum.

Can we talk about how we have 4 young guys in Ghost, Konecny, Provorov & Hagg that all look like seasoned vets out there game in and game out?

"Professional sport" players don't always make hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are a lot of "professional" sports leagues where players are making what the average middle class player makes. Granted, they have less expenses that the NHL/MLB player, but their sacrifices are as bad (and in most cases, worse) than the upper-echelon league players.

I'm not saying they should make 600k in the echl. But I do think a liveable wage should be do able for a league making money off them

I know guys who are renting in Chicago or New York for $15,000 a month

Well, then, those guys no nothing about managing money. Even in those cities that is a crazy stupid amount to pay.

Also that article reads like a "Woah is me. I'm rich but I'm so poor!"

frank that

“The message that I get back from fans when I tell them $1 million isn’t as much as many people think is, ‘Poor babies,’ ' Simon said. “It is important to understand the players are not complaining. Nobody is complaining about anything. Everybody feels very blessed to play in the NHL and to make what they do, but the purpose of this is to inform people and let them know it’s not as much as it seems on the surface. It’s not cash for life and if a player isn’t careful, he could go through his money quickly.”

I submit that the cost of living amounts stated in that article are the exact opposite of being careful.

Wow, that article is just awful.

I'd be pretty happy if I could save 25% of my income after taxes and expenses.

Your positivity has no place here, just like facts have no place within organized religion.

Yes, that too!

The author of the article should feel dumb for falling for the crap that Rand Simon, a Toronto-based player agent with Newport Sports Management Inc., spewed.

+1 I remember they showed how NBA players despite making the highest average salary spend the most. They tried to make us feel bad that they don't make that much.

Or like Toronto signing Hainsey and Polak because they don't have faith in their young dmen.

That's the thing. After all expenses (food, rent, taxes, etc.) are paid, the player is still banking over $200K. That's pretty nice.

By and large, professional athletes are not very well educated and have weak or non-existent financial skills. It's a self-inflicted wound for which I feel no sorrow.

I just find it ridiculous that ANYONE would be taxed at 50% of their income. That is criminal.

I sure wasnt wishing injury on him but I am not going to pretend i am bothered that he is injured.

He still gets his check and he knows playing this sport it comes with a risk of injury.

Now lets see the kids!

That may be the marginal tax rate for a portion of their earnings but when all is said and done, the effective tax rate will be much lower. So, yeah, again, that article is crap.

I'm in full agreement that the article was garbage.

With the last point though, Hockey players should be able to save a large portion of their income. Its very likely that they will only have a handful of years to earn the money they do. This is probably just further proof that whoever is giving those players (15k rent or 3k/month entertainment expenses) personal finance advice should be fired.

Are you getting taxed that much less than that ? And if it's referring to Canada (didn't bother reading) they have health care included if you add your health care costs most are taxed over 50% in America in all reality.

I do think the point is valid for ECHL players. Most AHL players make what 75K? What does an ECHL player make?

Some would say that even if you're not getting rich doing it, doing something you love to do makes you rich.

- MJL

Guys at this level are still chasing a dream and trying to make ends meat doing it...I personally know a lot of guys that played low level minor leagues and it sure as hell wasnt for the $....basically they play until they have to get a "real" job. But seriously if you can make a living playing hockey, that is a pretty good life.

It is crazy to think that we hold people responsible for their actions.

Can you imagine having to actually live with the consequences of your choices, your actions.

I'm not sure how Canadian taxes work. I assumed their tax rate would be higher largely due to publicly funded healthcare. I understand this may be naive. It would be great if someone from Canada could chime in. Nutter around?

Did you just compare getting killed in military service to breaking a leg playing a sport?
