Sorry...confused. Have Detroit and Colorado won after tanking? Detroit missed the playoffs for the first time in about 30 years last year - has it tanked?. Colorado has tanked and not been able to recover despite its picks. It supports my argument (thanks). What other aspects are weak (other than you don't agree and have trouble supporting your counterargument)?

To summarize, I contend that only 2 teams have successfully tanked and then won by drafting stars. Those 2 teams are Chicago and Pittsburgh, who had the benefit of getting generational talents instead of "down year" first rounders. A 3rd team was able to trade the picks for core pieces (again not a guarantee, but LA did it successfully).

Ergo, the Canucks should not tank to win because there is no guarantee it will produce a better team than it has had over the past 20 up and down seasons, which included being 1 win from the Cup with only the twins as top picks on that team.

Patrick Stefan, your example, was drafted in 1999. Hickey in 2007. During this time time period of 1999-2007 (that you brought up) Colorado, New Jersey and Detroit were dominant teams lead by, you guessed it, top 5 picks that the franchises, which were terrible for years, drafted. SO, you brought up the turn of the century skippy, don't go avoiding my point and ranting on nonsense.

Just admit it man, it's better to suck and draft in the 8-15 range instead of sucking and drafting top 5.

Face facts.

Look again at your examples. They just don't fit!

Det and Jersey won more through trades and unconventional late picks than through high picks (Det hasn't picked higher than 19th until this past draft since 1990, and its core was all 3rd round or much later).

The Lindros deal and trades (Roy) built Col more than the draft. Sakic was 15th overall. Niedermayer was the only top 5 on Jersey and that pick was traded from the Leafs (lucky). Your 3 example teams had a total of 2 top 5 picks on their way to Championships, and both were involved in trades. Those teams were not built through drafting top picks.

Still no reason to change my mind...

I like hockey and have been reading the "tank nation" nonsense for a long time. Instead of lurking as I have I thought I'd rejoin the HB community after a long absence and share my opinions. No hostility intended, fellow Victorian (for part of the year anyway).

I'd say it is better to stay competitive and pass a winning tradition down to the next generation instead of purposefully losing in hopes of lucking into a McD or Crosby at the draft.

What, a cell phone with the ability to read and to respond to emails and internet access?

That's not what the iPhone8 is. The iPhone8 a device that essentially replaces the brain of millennials.

Ive been an iPhone user all the way up until just recently. I decided to get a S8 and now I can see why some people never go back to apple.

And how do you plan to win?

More Eriksson/Sutter/Gudbranson/Vrbata/Miller
Vanek/Gagner/MDZ/Sedin/Edler types combined with picking outside of the top 5 or 6 every year?

Good luck

I switched from an Iphone to the Samsung Note 4, was an incredible phone. Upgraded at the end of my contract to the S7 edge and it is an even better phone. Not had a single problem with it and my contract is nearing its end. Cannot say enough good things about Android

My kids and my wife all have iPhones so when I'm away working and on wifi the iMessage still works, we also use WhatsApp too I guess.

Because I own my own engineering consultation company I guess it's a write-off, but still, it so expensive.
