You're not gonna get an under 30 UFA of that level at the center position at a fair deal. Either overpay and regret it later or draft and develop your own.

What's the difference between another team's UFA or your own UFA....they are going to get paid. Developing your own talent doesn't avoid their pay day.

2) Hometown discounts are a thing. Canucks got fantastic value out of Kesler and Henrik(before his decline).


Look at teams who win cups, how many of them have built cores through UFA? It's usually a core built through drafting and/or smart trades and then adding some supplementary pieces through UFA.

Going off onto building cores tangent is a more complicated issue. High talent young players are locked up and not available often to be gained as free agents.

Other than LAK the Hawks & Pens got a 1oa. Never happened here yet. We r drafting & trades r middlin types these days with all the RFA's getting locked up longterm. UFA's r drying up & getting weaker every year.

Hoping or believing a Crosby or McDavid or Matthews comes along is long odds.
