It was a stupid ass argument from day 1.
- Nucker101

I dont think it was a terrible argument/concern based on the Canuck's drafting history. The important factor of a rebuild is selling the future and right now we are excited by the prospects that Benning has accumulated (plus Horvat).

If the team sucked and had Horvat, Shinkaruk, Gaunce, Schroeder, etc. as the future, I would lose interest very quickly

So based on this do you extend him?

I don't want to re-open the same can of worms. So I'll agree to disagree.

Unless you find a better candidate (Lamiarello comes to mind) than yes

I think the franchise could benefit from him being around for another year or 2, but unfortunately there are several contracts that expire this year that you dont want to overpay on. If they can reign in his spending, I keep him for the drafting part of this rebuild

I wasnt really arguing the comment, but merely saying I could understand why some people suggested it by reiterating the caveat to Ray's point - "If you're building to something people can see..(they'll) be excited", with such a poor drafting record it was reasonable for media to think that people would jump off the bandwagon.

I do also think they underestimated the social media effect. We can track prospects like never before, much easier to be excited about the promise when we can get game-by-game stats and highlights from around the world

Demote to assistant GM, let him run the draft, scout for the draft and also scout the AHL for prospects to trade for.

Yeah, but my counter point would be that Benning was brought in with the rep of being a good drafter so as a fan it would make sense to me if they built a strategy around that strength and acquired as many extra picks as possible. Doing the opposite would probably have me questioning the direction of the team.

Totally fair. I think it was a narrative directed more at the casual fans, which have obviously showed up less than they did 5 years ago and still wish Burrows and Bieksa were around

Hard for me to narrow it down to one guy, but off the top of my head, I would interview the following:

Brisebois
McNab
Fenton
Dubas

Dubas would be awesome but probably being groomed for Toronto gig. Didn't someone already try to get him?

Yeah, I'd still ask for an interview. Wouldn't be surprised if he declines since Lou is due to retire soon. One of Hunter or Dubas is likely going to GM somewhere else eventually.

Like it or not, it's still an old boys club, some connection, mentoring, acceptance needs to be there or you end up with another Mike Gillis who never found his way with his peers.

Just checking out Canucks schedule and see they play Senators 2 times in first 5 games. NHL up to the usual stupid scheduling practises.

Demoting him is not how it works in the real world. But if your beef is his contract and cap handling then bring in a guru for that.

Doesn't have to be an NHL guy. Any Lawyer/Accountant will do. Even someone who has a sports agency or financial services background.

But make them a VP to overule or be in charge of what JB comes up with instead of an AGM that can be brushed aside like Gillman. Plus as VP they don't have to get involved with player side of ops just logistics.
