Wonky things happening with Vegas' roster right now. It's almost like McPhee is "waiting" for a team to free up room with an LTIR transaction. Hmmmm...

He has 9 D on his active roster and just sent Ship, Tuch and Theodore to the AHL to maneuver some sort of move it appears.

Couple that with Q skating Keith and Seabrook together for the first time in a while together... my wacky prediction is:

Vegas trades Jon Merrill to CHI for Pokka (or a Gustafsson type d prospect).

Then Q rolls:

Keith-Seabs
Merrill-Murphy
Kempny-Rutta/Franson
Osterle

* Forsling stays in AHL for now.

Dunno if that is the plan. But, I also seem among the minority. Yes, we COULD use a LW or additional help in the Top 6. But, I think we are at least OK there...it is the "D" that worries me. I would MUCH RATHER an added 3-4 D-man. If Stan can swing that I like our team going forward...

Keep an eye on Vegas. Their 23 man roster has only 11 forwards, 9 defenders (plus a 10th in Stoner on IR), 3 goalies. Vadim Shipachyov, Alex Tuch, and Shea Theodore assigned to AHL roster. Probably 6 of the 23 on their current roster could change in the next 48 hours.

Forsberg - Goalie

I cant believe how good this kid looks between the Pipes- no idea why Columbus let him go.

He may be the difference in the 20 games he plays between a Playoff spot or outside looking in.

Cap Friendly twitter feed has an interesting tweet about how the Hawks are becoming cap complaint with recent roster moves and LTIR assignments.

If anybody with more technical savvy than me can post it here for all to read it would be appreciated.

I am not sure how this season is going to turn out, but I have to give a stick tap to Bowman.
- Cap management
- Rutta/Kampf/Kempny/Fortin signings
- Saad/Forsberg trade
- Sharp signing
- draft/development of some young players (Hartman/Schmaltz/Debrincat/Hayden)
- new coaches Ulfie and Colliton

The Hjalmarsson trade looks dicey at best. But it was necessary for Cap reasons.

A lot of questions still, particularly on D. But some cap room too (which is a luxury we have not had in a while).

It is going to be a tough season. The loss of Hossa, Hjalmarsson, Darling and Kruger will be difficult to counter.

But I am looking forward to the season.

Hey I'm on board, love the way Karlsson plays.

Could honestly be a bigger than the Merrill for Pokka I suggested, and Hawks maybe would be looking to part with Hino, Forsling, Fortin types to fill a couple holes in one shot.

Hmm...i dunno. Is Merril an upgrade over what we have now at #5 or #6? Upgrade over Polka yes. Gustafson yes. But does he crack the top 6?

Ye of little Faith . Schmaltz by the sounds of it has worked on his game over the summer ,and it was not bad last year in the 2nd 1/2 of the season for sure . I may be bias ,no I am and wishful also .I think Debrincat could be a very special player ,U can't teach goal scoring ,and this kid has that .We need Duchene and his cap hell like a whole in the head ,throwing money at a imagined problem is not the answer
- oldduffman

Don't bother explaining. Guy has had it out for Schmaltz since day 1 even though he's bigger that Duchene is and didn't cough up the puck like he seems to think he did on his second stint. Schmaltz is a sneaky good back checker too. I wouldn't give him up for Duchene.

Does someone want to explain the exact moves we made, why and how we got to where we are cap wise?

... Yes I've already read the Twitter post from CapFriendly, I'd like more detail with the actual contract numbers we used.

Also will Rosie and Tootoo stay on LTIR all year?

Also: Lance Bouma is now your 6th* highest paid Hawk FWD, behind Kane/Toews, Saad, Anisimov and Panik...

Let that sink in.

Too be honest, not even 100% sure how good Merrill is.

I know he has some experience with 200+ NHL games, where he was playing in a top 4 role in NJ (albeit on some bad teams) and early days played some good hockey for Univ. of Michigan to get himself drafted in the 2nd round.

He and Murphy will know each other from some US National teams, so there is some familiarity there.

Who knows though... just spittballin' over here. ha.

Hockey Futures says this about him, "Merrill is a solid two-way defender with outstanding poise and hockey smarts. He skates well, shows no fear in rushing the puck up the ice and can quarterback a power play with his great distribution skills and shot. Since he has not played a full season of hockey since his freshman campaign at Michigan, he is still a little raw. Still, he has risen to the occasion and makes his team better whenever he’s on the ice."

Also Vegas does not play it's first game until Friday. So they can wait a little longer than most teams to make their last minute moves.
