NICE! Martinsen should be a 4th line goon upgrade over Bouma!

Any cap space cleared, or just a bag of pucks?

Martinsen is a massive dude that can skate and actually land a body check. Should be an upgrade on Line 4 over Bouma, IMO.

Ok.....so how many 4th liners do we need? Or is this a move that starts the ball rolling on something else. Please don't tell me that Hayden now becomes expendable !!

You mean we actually got someone that could win a fight, and knock the piss out of someone if need be! And actually is a decent skater?

I'd like to think this is Bowman accepting the fact that Bouma was a bust in the preseason. I don't imagine Bouma + Martinsen ever dressing in the same game.

A cheaper option at $675,000.

This is most likely an AHL deal made to address the needs of the IceHogs. It won't have any impact on the Blackhawks.

IMO, Martinsen > Bouma, who is on the NHL roster.

Just doing the Math. 95 points gets you into the playoffs and some times as low as 85. In a conference that is very balanced the middle teams are like to have a fairly even spread of points, so that would average down the points total to make the playoffs. I can see a bunch of teams near the 90+/- point mark and there could be 3 or 4 teams within a point of making it or missing it.
- -Doh-

Thank you for doing the math! Makes sense to me. I predict the Hawks make the playoffs as one of the top 3 teams in the Central, not as a wild card.

Baun wasn't in the Blackhawks future plans. It's good for everyone to let him try to impress folks in another organization and bring someone back who has some potential.

When the Hawks acquired Latta last season (for Schilling) people were calling for him on the 4th line. I would venture that 99% of us never heard of Martinsen prior to this deal and much like Latta he will not play for the Hawks.

Bouma suck, I agree about that but there will be better options within the organization than Martinsen.

Martinsen played a lot for both Colorado and Montreal last year. I'd like to see him given a look to fill that 4th line goon role over Bouma who has done nothing but chase the play and miss on hit attempts all preseason.

So why does Bergevin want Baun. Baun renaissance - if you can think of last season performance this way - was perhaps he could be an energy line player. His scoring picked up last year

So the new guy is a better skater, fighter, body checker? Harder to play against? Well we now have a pugilist. I would love to see him drop that jerk Reeves

Bouma was acquired to employ as an obstructionist, a checker, and he skates better than Tootoo. Bowman choose to say goodbye to an undersized tough guy in Tootoo because (gasp) he cannot do the two things Bouma can do.

I don't see Martinsen in the lineup for the Hawks unless the injuries pile up. He throws a lot of body checks, but isn't a great player. Hawks traded one AHL player for another.

Down on the farm
Rockford files as Sirott on radio calls it

The Swedish - Finnish flavor

On defense: Svedberg, Gus, Norell, Dahlstrom, Pokka

Could see Forsling there later on

Also skating for Hogs: Snuggerud, Rydash (sic)

Martinsen also had a bad pre-season for the Habs, though, and was ultimately waived for a team that doesn't have much forward depth. He's cheaper though so eh.

Mostly this seems like a swapping of two AHL players.

Its the Scandanvian thing to do - bringing in a big Norwegian to protect all the Swedes playing in Rockford.

Definitely a possibility. Western Conference will be competitive and a cat fight to get the 8 playoff seeds. If any playoff team gets less than 100 points, then they're likely eeking in with a wild card.
- AEL_Fox

Indeed, they no longer have a luxury to ignore regular season games and preserve themselves for playoffs (this is not even mentioning obligation to fans who pay significant amount to watch regular season games that were for last 3 years boring slugfest and driven to playoffs by 2 goalies).
Thinking Stars and Predators if healthy are a lock and Blues, Wild and Hawks will compete for 3-5 spots in the division if Jets do not compete again. From the West Oilers Flames and Ducks are initial lock ins with the rest competing for wild card with central 3 teams.
