The full quote from Eichel's agent said something along the lines that they advised Eichel to play out the year and sign next summer as they believe there is a greater chance he could earn more.

Eichel opted to sign now, so he obviously wasn't trying to get every penny he could.

And, he's also not making $10m this season. The deal kicks in next season.

Looks like it's just a paper move because Ships is waiver exempt. They can put 3 guys on LTIR today or tomorrow, not sure of the rule. Then they can bring him up along with Theodore and Tuch. But then a couple of those D need to go through waivers or get traded.
