Your last sentence is exactly why they say it the way they do. They're all competitive, but some are more competitive than others. Hence the "compete level" or "Level of compete" (I've heard it both ways).

I have been really disappointed by the offensive output thus far. We were supposed to have a far more potent "north" game. I'm a little less concerned because fans of other teams have been good enough to say the pre-season means nothing.

I was kind of thinking the same thing.... I think a big thing in preseason games is "don't get hurt" so maybe the do or die effort isn't there yet. Also, maybe don't wanna show all of your best cards in preseason either. A lot of guys might not have their legs under them yet either.
