I'm sure gare was pounding beers in his stall and smoking cigs in the intermissions. I don't really see how that's relevant to the stats

Just to be clear, i'm not saying Vanek deserves to have his jersey retired. I'm just saying their stats are similar and they played in 2 different eras. I'm too young to have seen Gare play, but when i talk to people who watched that era, Gare's name is usually not brought up, so i guess I'm not sure why he has his jersey retired.

Vanek was given a raw deal. Ville "woe is me" Leino was his center for a while. Vanek did more to almost single handedly elevate his teams to playoff-caliber than most give credit for. The guy was electric, but he gets a bad rap for his hang-dog attitude and his perceived nonchalance on the ice (which i think was stylistic, not effort related). No matter how much he scored, people still gave him crap.

Then add into the equation that Lindy made him his public whipping boy, and that made it worse. Fans of course sided with franchise coaching/playing hero over the "lazy euro"

TL:DR Vanek would have been great. The Sabres roster made him merely very good

This is what I was trying to say. That's not going to show up on the score sheet, but it doesn't mean that the player isn't contributing and that they're just on a team because of their "intangibles."

Just because they're not getting points, doesn't mean that they aren't important to the team in other aspects of the game. That seems to be the part that's getting lost in translation here.

Many others are saying that the only way a player with intangibles is effective is if they're also producing on the score sheet thus allowing them to be "measured."

I hope that makes more sense in where I'm coming from.

- HonkFortheGoose

Sure, but advanced stats are based around things that measure defense, and won't show up on scoresheets.

That's the debate. Do they intangibles matter for someone like Gorges, who get's caved in with shots and goals against?

Does what Gorges bring to the locker room, outweigh what another guy can do on the ice?

I think it really depends on the team and where they are at that point. In our case, no. Because while large strides have been made in bringing in some higher quality guys, there's not enough to essentially "pick up the slack" for a guy like Gorges at this point.

But a team like Pittsburgh probably could afford to have a guy like that on their roster.

This was the original point i made about our depth before. We're obviously not gunna have the younger players up here which is fine, let them kick ass in rochester.

This years getting the ship back in the right direction. I wouldnt worry so much about actual progress in the standings.

If it were up to me, I'd send them Moulson. He doesn't fit this system at all. We could save a million bucks, and if he has a good season in the minors, waive him again next year instead of buying him out. If he really hates it, he retires.

The Sabres don't owe Moulson anything more than a paycheck

I think they're just hoping for some sort of bounce back so they can retain and trade. He's definitely a buy out candidate.

But that doesn't make sense for Rochester either. They're going to be employing the same system. They want Rochester to be successful and they probably have a better shot at improving within the AHL ranks than we may here.

Honestly, if he doesn't fit, then he should sit in the press box. At least there he's not hindering either team in terms of actual play.

Realistically though, his only place on this team is the 4th line. His stats are gonna be baaad. Plus he could probably still tear it up in the minors. He doesn't fit a fourth line role at all imo (speed and physicality)

Isn't there a rule that only a certain number of NHL vets can play in the A on a certain night? I think kaleta and Ellis had to alternate nights, so Moulson could sit in the box and be an alternate coach too

Idk, other than playing with Eichel 2 games ago, he's been alternating between 4th and 5th line. DLO may even be passing him on the depth chart

Judging by Girg's play, he's not coming off that line. Kane is with Eichel this year. Pouliot is on line 3. That leaves the 4th line, and Erod has way outperformed Moulson there, but obviously there's health questions. DLO scored last night.

The chances of him being here next year approach 0, so why not cut the cord now and let Erod or Nolan have that spot, both of whom are better suited to a 4th line role?

I guess your source is better than mine

I will be sure to consult with you before I post again

all jokes aside

kane may not be here in 12 months
puliot may not be here in 12 months
girgens misses games
so the only vets that can play the left is ror, okposo and moulson

and they like moulson

til the sabres are strapped for cap space, it's a non story

Fair enough, i know nothing of the actual inner workings of the team.

From an outsider's view of it though, I can see the top 3 LW barring injuries. Moulson doesn't fit a 4th line role, and we have 2 other guys who do. If we waived him, and someone got injured, he doesn't have to clear entry waivers to come back up. All indications are that Girgs is at least close to usurping his role on the 2nd PP unit. I don't see a fit for him anymore. I'm sure he's a great, likeable guy, it just seems pointless to keep him, especially when Erod looked dynamic in that 1st preseason game

I think it was more a dig on Homie about a Kane extension

Also any word on the Eichel extension?

I think once he is signed (Eichel) more talks about extensions will be had with other players like Kane and Reinhart.
