That's a garbage move imo. He never got a chance to play in the top 9. Shocker, he doesn't make a difference playing on the 4th line
- jcragcrumple

he never fit in on those top lines (albeit in limited time). none of them did. They are absolutely better off in roch than on the fourth line. not sure how it's a "garbage" move.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he never got a preseason game with Reinhart. Bailey and Griffith did and neither of them scored. Why not give him the game Friday to at least let him make his case

Modern day nhl leans toward that though. these days its simply not enough to have the intangibles, those guys are getting phased out. new nhl you have to at least bring some sort of speed or other offensive/defensive skill set to the table to consistently be a part of a good nhl team.

The era of guys like gorges is basically dead.

This is what I was trying to say. That's not going to show up on the score sheet, but it doesn't mean that the player isn't contributing and that they're just on a team because of their "intangibles."

Just because they're not getting points, doesn't mean that they aren't important to the team in other aspects of the game. That seems to be the part that's getting lost in translation here.

Many others are saying that the only way a player with intangibles is effective is if they're also producing on the score sheet thus allowing them to be "measured."

I hope that makes more sense in where I'm coming from.

Peca in two places? I'd put Grier on the grinder line

I wouldn't be surprised if it has more to do with them also wanting Rochester to be a playoff team this year. Same reason Guhle was sent down early.

Bailey also has a bit more versatility in that he has experience on both the left and right sides, where as Baptiste is a RW.

Let him cook in Rochester a bit longer. I'm a little disappointed, but he doesn't need to clear waivers so it's not a big deal.

Yeah i get where you're coming from. They're often the guys that are bargain buys in ufa or brought in for half value at the deadline and can be very effective in their roles especially at lower cap hits. This is the plus side to the adv stats in hockey. stats that dont show up on an outdated score sheet and what kind of value that player can bring to a team.

He was a very good player don't get me wrong but not good enough to have his number retired IMO. Numbers retired are for those special players that come around every so often.

More
#Sabres have sent Nick Baptiste to Rochester.

He can't seem to make it, disappointing preseason.

- GilPerreault11

send bailey down as well

play bailey and nylander at lw in rochester so we have players ready for 2018-19 on both sides

I guess the two guys that probably stand out to me (that I remember well) are Travis Moen and Sammy Pahlsson. Watching them shut guys down all through the playoffs that year with Niedermayer was just a thing of beauty. Neither of those guys ever hit 30 pts in a year.

best example I have is nolan pratt

all he did was clear the front of the net, break up passes, chip the puck out of his own end

never showed up on the stat sheet, but had everything you want from a bottom pair d man

Hell, Vanek has similar numbers to Gare and he will never have a sniff at getting his jersey retired

I'm gonna assume that means that reinhart fails upward

Girgs-ROR-Okposo
Kane-Eichel-Reinhart
Pouliot-Larsson-Pominville
Moulson-Josefson-Bailey

Nolan

Shame that Erod got hurt, he seemed like a shoe-in. Josefson is meh. I didn't really see the speed that people mentioned. As predicted, that 4th line will be garbage

I'm sure gare was pounding beers in his stall and smoking cigs in the intermissions. I don't really see how that's relevant to the stats

Which sucks...could you imagine how absolutely electric a sniper Vanek could have been if he had applied himself?

40 goals a season easily

This was the original point i made about our depth before. We're obviously not gunna have the younger players up here which is fine, let them kick ass in rochester.

This years getting the ship back in the right direction. I wouldnt worry so much about actual progress in the standings.

People want to talk about Vanek not applying himself, boozing, smoking, gambling. That's fine, but the real issue is that we had 9 years to find him a center and due to crappy drafting, a do-nothing GM and cheap ownership, we squandered one of the best natural scorers this franchise has ever seen. And he still managed to make Luke Adam appear like an NHL center, and he got Coho that 20 mil contract. It's frustrating to me to hear that people think Vanek never lived up to his potential. The Sabres blew it, plain and simple

agreed, underrated passing ability too. I just wish he had a little more speed.
