Looks like the Leafs put in a lid 15 minutes of effort, just to show they can.

Now they shut it down for the rest of the game, that's cool.

Dermott looks good as does Holl for the second game in a row.

I really like the Borgman kids game. I think he is gonna be a found gem. Plus he is still a kid and the potential is there.

I get the Hyman thing and for the first 50 games it was great, but seemed like at the end of last season and playoffs he was much less effective at digging for the puck and coming up with it. Maybe he got tired or maybe dmen were more ready for him. He also loses it a lot and misses some decent passes so I dunno if I'm totally sold on him as a permanent winger for Matthews. A guy like Brown seems to be able to do similar things as Hyman but can also handle the puck.

If he was as good at getting the puck to Matthews as people seem to think, he would have had more assists last season. People are going to argue that getting the puck to a guy on a scoring play doesn't always get you an assist, and that's true, but usually it does. His centre got 40 (frank)ing goals, most of them 5v5, and Hyman only picked up 18 assists. I don't care what your job is, dig out pucks from the corners, whatever, if you're on a good scoring line and you can't even manage 30 points then the other two guys are carrying you.

Brown is a waste on the fourth line. He's being set up for a disappointing season. Swap him with Hyman, or put Marleau on the top line and get Brown on Kadri's line, he did really well there last year.

I think there has to be a place for him on this team. There's no way he's not a better option than Marincin. With Borgman, Rosen, and Dermott there, Marincin might as well just grab a Marlies sweater.

With Dermott and the two new Swedes going for a third pairing slot, Marincin is so gone.

I doubt Brown stays on the fourth line, and Babcock made a comment that sounded like he doubts it too. The Leafs might not be so lucky with injuries this year either, these combos will move around.

Imo Hyman adds D to the top unit too, that's part of it.

At any rate it's a good problem to have when a 20 goal rookie scorer like Brown has to break into the top 9.

Does Rielly take a step this year?

Or more of the same?

I think he took steps last season defensively and that hurt his production. Hopefully this year he's more comfortable with the game Babcock wants him to play and he can show a bit more offence.

One of the benefits with the Leafs keeping Travis Dermott is he can play RD. He did it a lot in Erie. Gives them flexibility.

I think Rosen the same

45-50 points this year. He looks fast, confident and will be more inclined to jump up with HAinsey back there to hold the fort defensively. Plus I think he gets more PP time this season.

Ps. That was a beauty goal.

Given what Pittsburgh won the Cup with last season, this defence can definitely be good enough as long as the offence is close to what they were last season and Andersen is solid/healthy.

That's basically what we had with Howard Berger. Those were always interesting blogs. I remember the day he wrote an entire blog just to tell all of Western Canada that they're irrelevant.

If Borgman makes it a thing, I'll be happy. If one or both of the Swedes they signed turn into players man that would come in handy.
