there's a small town named Matterrello (near Merano) ... fairly narrow valley , great wine... there's a B&B there, the vintner produces primarly grappa.. unbelievable stuff. the fresh pressed grape juice is so flavorfull .. you don't need the wine.

Cool - I haven't made it there yet, I will check it out on my next trip. Piedmont is also north - but on the Western part of Italy. Last time there we were sampling Barolos dating back to the late 50's.

Actually, I've skied in Cortina, its just east of Merano. Super place - would be great to do a family ski trip this winter. It's an expert ski resort for sure though.
