Wow, I can see what several posters were adamant about all summer long. Trade all the vets, get rid of the Sedins, Gudbranson, Eriksson, no need to have players like Vanek, Del Zotto, Gagner or Sutter.

I mean play the youth, they are so much better at not defending or drop passing to no one, those stick to stick passes that don't stick...thing of beauty I'm telling ya.

So much more entertaining...what a phenomenal game 9-4, holy excitement Canuck fans, get rid of the vets...

No thanks to the bloated vet contracts though

Look at page 1 of this thread for examples on why it's nice to have some cap space

Why? Nothing to learn there. Europe is better.

Juolevi is still really not doing it for me defensively. He also has bad gap control like Subban when defending against puck carriers through the neutral zone. Guy is not NHL ready. Game is too fast for him.
- Nucker101

then utica is better option for him than another year of junior....IF hes allowed to go to AHL this season that is

You have nothing to learn in Junior when you dominate.

Juolevi doesn't even come close to dominating in London

remember that he will be currently adapting to a different size of ice and nhl play. Needs a bit of time. See how he is in a few months in utica

For sure, it's a meaningless preaseason game

Dominating kids hardly is against NHLers.
Bigger faster & better is what he needs to play against.

For the guys battling for NHL jobs, it's basically just as important as a regular season game so I'd say it's fair to judge them a bit, not like they're just floating around like a vet with a secure roster spot. Holm adjusting to NA ice is obviously a valid point though. Unlike Larsen, he's played on it his whole life so he gets some slack for sure.

I though he wasnt eligible. Salo in finland is best for him, he will get him ready.

As a 25yr old that slack won't last long though.

Was at the game, row 10 aisle seats in offensive corner. Fantastic vantage point

Some observations:

- This was an AHL game, a poor one at that.
- Bauchmann is a complete sieve, regardless of defense in front of him.
- Joulevi had a couple of "flashes of the future". He can go work on those in Finland and the AHL for a couple years though. Looked pedestrian several times on D.
- Subban didn't look too bad, has some wheels and scored a beauty goal.
- Early in the second period, I saw Schmegma and Chaput on the ice at the same time. I became severely nauseated. Turns out it was the "Carve Lumberjack" sandwich i bought with my shiny Ticket Member Food card (thanks Trevor). *(just kidding the food was actually very good)
- Archibald was all over the ice tonight and the 5 min for interference was a head scratcher considering the puck was off the glass and into the feet of Matteau when he nailed him. Reffing wasn't very good at all
- Boeser is the real deal. He looks calm and in control out there.
- #17 looked as disinterested as the previous #17. No way this guy makes the team.
- Virtanen looks good out there. He can play on my team. Is there room on this team?

With the exception of Boeser, I don't see any one else on the team opening day (sorry JV, Goldy). The "Let the Kids Play" advocates took it on the chin today. I'd rather see them all sent down and soak for a while and watch some rental hockey while they develop and maybe learn to play defense.

lots of euro players have trouble adapting to the small ice.
Coach cull hasnt looked to great thus far either, but its pre season and hes just filling in for green. Gallants team though looked far more ready to play.

This year the the TDL I would say to trade Vanek, Baerschi, Guddy. We already know the twins will likely re-sign for next year, hopefully for cheap though. Naturally there is always a chance there could be some good chemistry and Horvat could improve yet again, and Boeser could be a 30g guy(he certainly has the shot, positioning, etc for it) which could make us better. But i think other teams ahead of us improved more than we did.

Although it was a mish mash line-up d zone exits were so so. VGK forecheck looked good or was it simply our plugs looked bad?
I'd go with the latter.

Not many players looked like anything other than AHLers with a few looking good or promising. BB looks a lock & JV making himself more noticeable. Otherwise just an exhibition & an audition for the rest in Utica.

even though he thinks he gets some slack some of those plays werent pretty. Not taking your man on a play isnt cool. Im wondering if theres a difference in play between nhl and euro teams. Over the decades its been said euro teams are low contact and not physical. I believe this primarily could be the difference. If so I can see why holm had difficulty tonight.
