Not really. The game is still played and won between the hashmarks. You take that away and it doesn't matter how large the ice surface is. As Ray Ferraro put it, most of the extra ice on the Olympic rink is useless ice. The fact that the 2010 Olympics (on an NHL sized rink) was no more or less exciting than the 2014 Olympics (in Russia, on International sized ice) proves that point.

Yes and no.

Yes, if the NHL officials would actually enforce the rules and make the calls to eliminate all the hooking, holding, clutching and grabbing, interference, etc. that slows the elite players down.
No, in that a wider surface makes zone entries easier while also yielding more ice surface for the offensive team to maintain puck possession while creating those beautiful plays from highly skilled players. Sure, the crash the net philosophy will still apply, but having more space and time to create adds excitement and undeniably helps the highly skilled players to perform their aging.

God I hope so. Based on the fact that speed is something they plan on using heavily, it should really open up doors for Bailey and Baptiste on the roster as well. Maybe not right off the bat, but I think they'll both end up playing a chunk of the season here in Buffalo.
