feel like it was on purpose. Most of them were intelligent, mcjesus' answer is where im at right now.
I dont know if bigger ice is the solution or change in rules but the game is dying in the neutral zone and they've gotta fix that.
Im not convinced you can do that with rule changes though. Zone/boring basketball was king until a coach came along and killed it.
The offside trap and parking the bus was king in soccer until coaches constructed formations that exploited that.
Imo we are still waiting on hockeys revolutionary coach. The one who will come in with the philosophy that is far more exciting/effective than dump and chase and one that cant be defended by the 1-3-1, at least for 60 mins. - Sabresfan-365
The problem is the amount of space a hockey player can cover vs a basketball or the other football player can.
1-3-1 or just 1-4 works because they can cover the entire width of the ice, in soccer you just get fast guy out on the wing and defeat a trap(the ball just has to be in the air before you can get behind the defense right?), basketball you can just launch 3's all day. There's no analog in hockey.

With the limited space, the players size and speed, and the rules like icing and offsides, beating the trap is not going to be changed by some revolutionary coaching change. The rules in place such as icing and offsides will keep the trap alive. They tried beating it with the hybrid icing and the "wrap around dump" but that's not feasible for every line, every player to be able to do.
He didn't get a good look here last season, but after watching the Prospect Challenge he can fly.
He will most likely start in Rochester but he is someone that can be that mid season call up if he finds his scoring touch. - Stripes77
I completely agree. He dominated the prospects challenge, but he needed to do that. But even in the 3 games he played in Buffalo I watched him closely and I really like how his game translates into the NHL. Obviously it was a small sample size, and he did look lost in the defensive end at times. But that's to be expected when you're tossed to the wolves like that.
I love his speed, and playmaking ability. And he was known for being a dominant 2-way player in college, so there's no reason to think that won't come with experience and confidence. I could see him being a VERY good fit on a line with O'Reilly and Okposo - he'll add much needed speed on the left side...

offside trap is the line pushing up as the ball is delivered, its specifically designed to trick teams into doing just that.
i agree theres a tougher challenge because of the speed and by extension the surface area but i still think this is their best shot at overcoming boring ass hockey. I dont think theres really a set of rule changes that could tackle it.

I admit I don't watch a ton of soccer, but most of what I see is played on the perimeter with a push toward the goal once they get down low.

this is what most of premier league soccer is but not to beat the offside trap its just what these teams have decided to build around.
would also explain why its been some time since they made any noise in the champions league lol

If increasing ice width to International size will cost too much to reno or loses too many seats league wide, the next best option is to move the blue lines closer to center ice. I think it's just overshadowed by other missteps like the McNabb trade.
Oh well...sometimes you trade Paul Gaustad for a 1st...other times you trade a 2nd away for a washed up vet. Or as my father would say, "Sometimes you are the pigeon and sometimes you are the statue."
Makes me all the more pleased with the Bottering Ram's decisions thus far.

Olympic ice would be too big. Take out a row, maybe 2, and that would be plenty. But retrofitting all the arenas would be seriously expensive. They'd have to extend the pad, and all the pipes underneath that make the ice.

Not really. The game is still played and won between the hashmarks. You take that away and it doesn't matter how large the ice surface is. As Ray Ferraro put it, most of the extra ice on the Olympic rink is useless ice. The fact that the 2010 Olympics (on an NHL sized rink) was no more or less exciting than the 2014 Olympics (in Russia, on International sized ice) proves that point.
