In 1983 Ronald Reagan proposed increased cencorship on Government employees, reducing the amount of i formation the American Public could access. Gag orders would also be served for life. He did not have much support and much of this did not get passed.
He was also a staunch supporter of the PMRC, attempting to restrict musicians freedoms of expression.
Reagan also hated workers unions, and treated the union leaders like communist enemies.

In short, he was a bit of a wiener.

For good reason, he was willing to sign it too. NY Times called it censorship, I call it smart!

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15— In March, expressing ''grave concern'' about disclosure of Government secrets, President Reagan signed an order requiring more than 128,000 Government employees and contractors to agree to lifelong censorship.
The order requires Government employees who handle certain materials involving intelligence sources and methods to sign agreements providing for ''prepublication review'' of their writing by official censors to be sure Government secrets are deleted from the material. The order also provided vastly expanded tests by polygraph, or lie-detector, in investigating such disclosures.

What a fascist. Wanting complete control and being able to stop freedom of speech. Definitely a Trump supporter.

After 9/11 I saw a need for it. I see now it can step on our freedoms If used incorrectly. NOT cut and dried for me.

give me some examples of Reagan censoring people. This should be good! Censorship is what Liberals do which is going on in our University's as we speak. Liberals are the racists as they've been throughout history. Censorship is what Liberals do best. Please get a proper education!

Bush named the enemy which was Islamic Terrorist which Obama couldn't or wouldn't do.

Ah, wonderful - yet another "pro free speech" right wing nutjob who doesn't actually understand the basis of what freedom of speech affords you. It gives you the right to not be persecuted unfairly by the government for your views. It does NOT affordy you a platform, nor does it mean that people have to listen to you. It does NOT save you from private consequences from your actions if your employer, or indeed anybod other person or entity, deems that your words are poop. With regards to universities, public universities may be public grounds one which one can congregate freely (such as your buddies at the University of Virginia), but private universities do not afford this luxury.

One thing to note is that the US is one of the only developed countries that does not have in place any legislation regarding the excepmtion of hate speech - so much for being the "greatest country in the world"...

A kings fan is part of that 35%? Sick. You didn't just recently purchase any tiki torches did you? I can appreciate that you stick to your gut feelings no matter the truth but the content of said feelings is disturbing. Do the rest of the Kings fans on this site a favor and stick to hockey. Keep your politics to your rallies.

So a university denying a platform to somebody who it know will spread hate speech is bad, why exactly...?

(Note, assuming that you can process this, that the denying a platform does not infringe upon free speech rights)

My initial post:

As stupid and offending as some words may be we really need to quit being so sensitive.

I stand by it! Trying to make me out as ignorant is laughable! I've remained consistent in my argument.

- arh777

Yes, you consistently stick to your ignorance in these comments. I guess you can take some pride in that.

You believe that it is wrong to use racial and ethic slurs, but homophobic slurs are ok and something people shouldn't be so sensitive about. Got it.

It took you folks 100's of years to come around on racial discrimination (at least outwardly), so that is progress. All you have left are the homosexuals and Muslims to outgroup so you can grow the ranks of those that tithe to your mega churches. But even that's slipping away from you.

I suggest you turn off Fox News, travel to Laguna Beach which is a 30 minute drive for you (or LA is a 1 hour drive north, and SF/Oakland are a 1 hour flight from John Wayne) and go meet LGBT folks and Muslims in these areas. They aren't out to hurt your or destroy your friends and family.

When you don't treat people equally and with respect, you don't deserve to be heard. It is that simple.

Where did I say it's ok to use homophobic slurs? I never did! It took longer then 100 years to end racial discrimination but people like the senator from West Virginia, KKK Bird a Democrat and a clansman prevented it from happening.
I have gay friends and most agree we need to lighten up. I'ts the hard core leftist political loonies that exasperate the tension. Much like Antifa is doing the same thing.

that's not what the Constitution says! Men and women died for your right to say and do stupid offending things as long as it doesn't break the law. your interpretation of the Constitution doesn't hold muster.

Calling out someone for making a derogatory remark isn't a liberal issue, or at least it shouldn't be.
- Only_A_Ladd

Someone comes in here and drops a derogatory term. He should be called out for it. Would you be making this statement if it was the n-word or if our blogger was called something derogatory because of his ethnicity? "Quit being so sensitive, Sheng!"
- Only_A_Ladd

Fully agree.

Transgender is a mental disorder and those people need help.
- arh777

Fully disagree.

My point was we need not be so sensitive about name calling.
- arh777

I think, in general, there are a lot of people out in the world who will try to hurt you. So indeed, gaining a tougher skin is a necessary thing to overcome those who would take you down. But words matter; they can hurt. So I choose to be on the side which tries not to hurt people.

I like a good racist/sexist/homophobic joke around my close friends in private and anonymously on the internet, but I dont want to say or hear that poop in public or at work .
- Larsson_fan

Serious question. How do you reconcile saying things to me like "Stick to what you know, like Ping Pong" and not wanting to hear "that poop in public or at work"? This isn't your workplace, sure, but it's mine.

Perhaps you should invest some of your time and money into educating yourself. As "one of those folks at the university", I pride myself on not being ignorant. It's not about "being a snowflake", it's about realising that the world does not revolve around white, pseudo-christian men.
