It was easier than pointing out Loui had 63 points the year before and was 31 years old. poop happens. You don't get any guarantees when you sign folks. However, if we had signed Loui to the same contract we'd still have almost $12M in cap space before dealing with LTIR which currently sits at $10.6M. So really it wouldn't have been a waste, but not really a financial disaster.
Ryan Clowe was perhaps the worst signing and his cap hit has been completely irrelevant for the last three years.
We could have signed 31 year old Radulov instead of 31 year old Stafford. It would have cost more but it really wouldn't affect us doing anything. I mean sure, no more (frank)ing Russians is a decent rule, but still.... |

You do realize these players have to want to sign here right? |

You do realize they have to be tendered an offer to decide if they want to accept it, right?
Jagr's willing to play in Jersey. Guess what? No offer.
Drew Stafford is willing to play in Jersey. Guess what? small offer. |

the thing is, signing a 6mil 30-somethin year old, or 2.. or a 40-smthin yr old in Jagr's case, won't win us a Cup this year.. maybe not even make us a playoff team. Will those players be on this train in 3 years when we're hopefully contending? hard to say.
So if they won't help us win a Cup this year, what will they do? They'll make it less likely we draft a player that is much more likely to help us win a Cup in the future. With that in mind, it's better not to add those kinds of players right now.
I don't think it's terrible what Ray did. This is a big development year for Zacha and Hichier, not to mention some of the other kids in the lineup.
The Johansson move was a solid one. The right kind of player at the right kind of price. Signing higher-priced players that are past their peak isn't smart for a rebuilding team. Johnasson is perfect, and hopefully will help our Zachas and Hischiers. We want Hall to be happy too. The momentum of our top 6 this year is important for several reasons, including the productivity and optimism of Hall.
We're going to continue developing the kids this year and let the chips fall where they may.. hopefully landing us a top 5 pick, which should, theoretically, secure a very nice foundation to then add and build upon.
In my opinion, with our defense prospects combined with a lack of a franchise player, we don't have that foundation. I think with a top defensive prospect likely coming in this year's draft, that we may have the right pieces to move forward with.
I think this offseason we'll see Ray open the purse a little more. |

That's fine but a lot of folks said he'd spend after last year. We'll see what happens. The problem is while the forward rebuild has been going well the D signings have been brutal.
Also, just because we'll be ready to spend doesn't meant the right free agents are now all available. A guy like Okposo needs to be signed when they hit the market. There are limited quality free agents and yes, they get too much term and $$$ sometimes but they are a building block as much as trades. There isn't much difference between signing a guy like okposo and trading for a guy like MoJo. Except you don't lose prospect or picks with Okposo. Just cap space which we got lots of. |

I recently got a place in Old Lyme, and have one in Toms River, its pretty much the same drive time for me either way so I am down. Speaking of CT Devils action, I see the Bing Devs visit the Wolf Pack only one time in the spring which is kind of weak.
