I mean, really, they do look ridiculous. To paraphrase the late, great George Carlin, could you just imagine an NFL coach standing on the sideline in a full NFL uniform and helmet? Or better yet, Hakstol with his Flyers uni and skates on or the Sixers coach in his jersey and shorts?

I have always understood it this way; while a baseball manager could theoretically be called the head coach (ala other sports), the terminology is meant to differentiate his role:

1) The manager handles all strategic decisions (determining who plays, setting lineup and pitching rotation, ordering an intentional walk, bringing infield up, sending in a pinch hitter, pinch runner or defensive replacement, etc). However, it is the coaches on his staff who interact the most frequently with the players (batting coach, pitching coach, relaying signs from the dugout, waving in/holding up runners, etc).

2) In years past, not all managers wore uniforms. Connie Mack, for example, never wore an A's uniform in his 50-plus years in Philadelphia. He always wore a suit and a hat, even in 100-degree weather.

Makes sense, even though it seems that the coach (other sports) and manager (baseball) do share similar duties.

What's JVR's value even as a soon-to-be UFA who will command a raise?

Since I expect Hagg/Morin to start with the Flyers and Sanheim to start in the AHL, I wouldn't offer a d prospect.

Having said that, if Sanheim has a great camp and forces Hexy to keep him up, I'd consider exploring Hagg and STL's 2018 1st before the year starts. But I really Dk if this offer would be over payment or not enough; just don't know JVR's value.

This is actually a fair offer that wouldn't hurt the Flyers. JvR in my opinion is an average to above average top six forward but it's not he's been playing with outstanding talent until last season. Yes, Phil Kessel is a gamer but there is a pretty difference between the Kessel era and the Matthews era. JvR is also reliable in the shootout.

In a vacuum I would probably do Hagg and a first for JVR.


But his next contract is what would give me pause. He is at 4.25 for this season and a UFA. At 28 he is in his prime and if he put up 25-30 goals as has been his norm, would we be able to resign him without blowing up the cap? I wouldn't want to lose Hagg and that pick for a one year rental. Especially when this team is not ready to win and JVR would be 30-32 when we are. Cap hit and term.......
