Hearing NCAA free agent Blaine Byron making an interesting decision. Will sign an AHL contract w/FLA containing an "out" clause...
That would allow him to sign with another NHL team during next season if there is an offer. (I think FLA would be given option to match)...
Word is Byron wanted to take this route rather than sign a two-year ELC. Bit of a bet on himself. |

in 1979 the Rangers selected Doug Sulliman at #13 over Brian Propp because Sulliman's was best friend's with Don Maloney
in the book Thin Ice: A Season in Hell with the NY Rangers by Ratso Sloman, a few players talk about how dumb that was.
That's a great book if you ever get a chance to pick it up

Form the voting to date, I am shocked the Ridley/Miller for Carpenter trade hasn't gotten more votes. That trade is one of my top five worst overall. The Gagner trade was horrific as well. |

The interesting thing is that Peter and Anton defected first, and the older brother Marian was left at home. He was pretty much treated like a pariah, lost all of his friends, because if you associated with him at all, the authorities would pretty much be on you like flies on poop. His father pretty much lost everything. Went from being a hero in the country raising three sons that led national gold medal teams, to a guy that they humiliated.

Yup, pretty much what happened to a lot of those families. Has to be a tough thing for these kids who defected. Pretty much knowing you were going to bring down the pain on any family memebers that you left. |
