and MSG routinely welcomes back Keenan with open arms and Neil Smith has been Kaepernick'd forever
go figure - jimbro83
I know, it's crazy. Something else had to have gone down with Smith for this kind of treatment. But it is garbage, since he was the architect of that team, at least initially. Plus made the Messier and Larmer trades. |

okay okay okay .... has to be getting Espos butt buddie for the streaking Blonde bombshell who lit us up big time for yrs when Hodge was done & over 1st month
I would like to make mention of not a trade but ....Bossy goes #22
when we had 2 picks ahead & got #16 Lucien Debluios & #20 Ron Duguay
Now thats a crime you have to find a category for..... |

If I covered every missed opportunity/screw up in a draft pick or poor free agent signing, we would be here all year. Plus, are you going call out out the other teams who picked before #22 for not taking Bossy as well? |

actually Dundee got it wrong
the Rangers picked #8 and #13 and took Deblois and Duguay
the Islanders got Bossy at #15 overall |

you could argue that the second round was even worse, well, maybe not worse, but...
Rangers picked 26th overall and took Mike Keating
Islanders picked 33rd and took John Tonelli

As I said, we could play this game all year. In addition, every other team can play a similar game. |

Islanders drafted absolutely fantastic in those days
how about 1974, they get Clark Gillies 4th overall and Bryan Trottier 22nd overall
Dave Maloney sandwiched in between at #14 |

Draft picks back in the day had to be way more of a mistake. Much smaller pool compared to when the european players where allowed to enter. |

in 1979 the Rangers selected Doug Sulliman at #13 over Brian Propp because Sulliman's was best friend's with Don Maloney
in the book Thin Ice: A Season in Hell with the NY Rangers by Ratso Sloman, a few players talk about how dumb that was.
That's a great book if you ever get a chance to pick it up |

I could imagine. Had to be so much better back then. No cell phones with everyone having camera's. No social media.
Kids now can't even crap in stairways without it being posted. |

I just recently bought it to read. Have ordered from Amazon, "We Did Everything But Win" The Story of the 1964-1975 Rangers. |

when you read the Sloman book, pay particular attention to the fact that the players don't really seem to like Dave Maloney at all
I always think of it when I see Gresch and Maloney together these days |

On a mildly related point, I watch this special on NHL network last night about the Statsny brothers, and how they defected to North America. It's an interesting watch, as those guys were pretty much the first to defect from Eastern Europe.

Yes, but way, way later. The Statsney brothers defected in the early 80s, well before the Russians started coming over.

Yeah, I knew Nedved was later, I think I read an article about it. He was pretty young too.
That would be an interesting thing to watch about the Statsney bro's. Hopefully they play it again. |

The interesting thing is that Peter and Anton defected first, and the older brother Marian was left at home. He was pretty much treated like a pariah, lost all of his friends, because if you associated with him at all, the authorities would pretty much be on you like flies on poop. His father pretty much lost everything. Went from being a hero in the country raising three sons that led national gold medal teams, to a guy that they humiliated.
