When the Oil went on to win a number of Cups, who was the leader of the Oilers, in the Playoffs? Was it Gretzky or Messier? Messier always scored less than Gretzky....but who pushed the pace and who had more impact on those 80's Cups? Didn't Messier win one more Cup in Edmonton, after Gretzky left for Los Angeles? Didn't Messier win another Cup, in New York for the Rangers? Messier never won a scoring title, but his impact on his team was profound and he led them to Championships. My point wasn't to say that Matthews was a better point or goal producer, I looked at more than the scoring totals and looked at who elevated their game in tight playoff games. Both teams had good young secondary star players, that will be the greatest advantage over who is better. I think that the Leafs have a bit more of younger secondary scoring then Edmonton, however, the Leafs defense is weaker. Goaltending appears to be a wash. Who has the better farm system right now? I give the Leafs a slight edge.

Wouldn't know.....I don't touch the stuff. Logic dictates that you look at all things that surround these two players. Neither team has a number 1 elite Norris candidate defenseman. When one of the two teams gets one, that'll tilt the discussion towards future championships. The Oil had Coffey, the Islanders had Potvin. The Pens showed that you can win by committee. There aren't enough of them to go around.
