Zibinajed is asking for 5.35 mil Rangers offering 4.1 mil - jimbro83
How many years is Zib seeking at $5.35M?
I had mentioned on two earlier blogs here that $5.25M to $5.5M was annually possible for up to 4 seasons. If they are only offering the $4.1M, they must really have some concern still over his broken fibula injury, or maybe even more, due to the way his foot hit the rear boards at an awkward angle, which in turn, caused the fibula to break. He may have also suffered some sort of foot injury that the Rangers never disclosed, due to him also wearing a special boot at a time during his recovery. Even an improperly healed ankle sprain can cause bigger problems down the line. |

If the Rangers do not have any concern with possible future symptoms of Zib occurring in relation to the broken fibula, or an unknown yet as well, possible foot injury he also may have suffered in that game, or aggravate after returning to action, then they may be looking ahead to what his next in turn contract demands may end up being. If he excels in play remaining 100% healthy, it would then put him near that Stepan $6.5M level here annually, which would be too costly cap wise if at $5.35M next season. |

these are just the numbers the parties release to the arbitrator
the player always submits a number a little high, team submits one a little low. Happens every time
I don't think they'll get to arbitration |

Only way Rangers could get a team to take Staal's contract is if they included another healthy eye in the deal - jimbro83
what if he got a glass eye with that teams logo on it? like the bad guy in last action hero. marketing dream! |

I also don't see arbitration being necessary for a $1.25M difference between the two parties.
With Zib seeking $5.35M, or double last season's $2.625M salary + an extra $100,000, the Rangers should see if $4.65M would get the deal done. They have $8.4M in cap space as of today, knowing that they cannot really afford to leave less than $3.75M (5%) in available cap space after signing Zib. That would work out precisely to that $4.65M amount for next season.
If the issue were to reach arbitration, due to Zib being out injured long term last season, I could see the ruling being even slightly less, coming in at $4.5M. That would still be about a 71% salary increase for Zib over last season, when taking into account in arbitration cases, the allowable consideration for injuries. |

Interesting points by Brooks on how Berzegelov has an out clause if he doesn't make the Rangers, and that the Rangers supposedly feel Pionk is NHL ready. It feels like our plethora of forward depth we had last year got flipped to defensive depth. |

I wonder if it will cost more to lock up Zibby long term than what he asked. Brassard asked for 4.85mm in arbitration before the Rangers locked him up to a 5x5 deal. |

Turn Holden into a center? Because there is no other option in free agency or Hartford.
Is this the NHL or pond hockey?
They meant by trade not by positional change..... |

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..............
Larry Brooks used to write great pieces in the Post that truly provided inside scoops and behind the scenes info for Ranger fans. For a time, he really was able to convey the "pulse" of the Ranger locker room and was a "must read" for many of us older folk. I fondly remember Larry having an exclusive with then GM Neil Smith the day the Rangers acquired ( I think ) Joey Kocur in a trade. Smith was especially candid in talking about Joey being a "deterrent" and was great reading. Sadly though, that time has past. Larry no longer seems to get any scoops or provide anything remotely insightful. I remember when Dan Boyle had his ( verbal ) fight at the conclusion of the season with Larry and it was curious to see how the whole organization didn't really stick up for Brooksie. Larry handled the incident with great class and maturity, but I believe his articles today to simply be a shell of his former ability. |

Still like Brooks columns & usually his stuff is a great read but he has slipped the past few years. Think him & Sam been drinking from the same tainted water cooler. |
