The retro-colored ones were something he experimented with and then rejected after practicing with them and finding it distracting. The Stadium Series black ones were kind of forced upon him and Neuvirth. Mason hated them (athough they definitely looked cool), wore them in one game where he didn't fare well -- believe it was a home game against the Islanders -- and then was happy to ditch them. - bmeltzer
Wait, he had problems playing because of the color of the pads he was wearing?! Did I read this correctly? |

HACKstall FLEECED on the NOlan Fatrick signing. Another in a string of brilliant moves. Is Lilja even playing anymore? Maybe we'll trade Hartnell for him.

The Boyd Gordon signing was a good idea.
The Flyers have stats that we, as mere mortals, are not allowed to have.
Every move that a coach/GM makes is a good, well-thought-out move...until he gets fired, then he wasn't making the right moves. |

It happens a lot. Marc-Andre Fleury used to wear bright yellow pads. Once he switched them, his play went up significantly.
But keep on keeping on. |

I kinda have to agree - gear makes a HUGE impact on your ability to play. If something doesn't fit right then it's going to hamper you... why should color be any different for a keeper who is so reliant on his ability to see? |

Because you're not looking at yourself when you're playing?
If it was the fit of the equipment, fine, though that is a little weak. But, if the color of his own pads is an excuse he used for poor performances then that's absurd. And it replaces the "new lighting at the Wells Fargo Center makes it hard to see the puck" as my new favorite Mason excuse. |

I would assume that a goalie would see his pads all the time while playing. Even if it's just peripheral vision. And when it's a scramble in front of the net you are absolutely going to see your own gear. I just put it up there with a pre-game meal routine, you know what works for you... Don't screw with it if it works... |

I don't think it's the color as much as the fit. Players are very specific about their equipment. Most players gets pro sticks from manufacturers in quantities of like 50 or so, and end up rejecting any that they don't like. So I don't find it odd at all that a brand new set of pads weren't comfortable for what Mason was used to.
As for the color, some goalies find certain pad colors easier to track the puck with when there are scrambles and rebounds. Again, see: Marc-Andre Fleury's bright yellow pads ca. 2004.
I know you like to look for reasons to hate Mason, but this is reaching, even for you. |

Exactly, which begs the question - why the heck would the team/league foist* a color on a goalie's pads?
* Yes, I said foist |

Puck comes in against the black pad and someone takes a whack at it... can you see the puck change direction? I totally can see black pads causing an issue if the puck is in close or if a shot starts to leak through you can't see the puck as easily. |

I disagree. In a low scramble it might be harder for some goalies to pick up the puck while wearing black pads. |

I edited it. I meant irrelevant as in the bulk of game play. Tracking pucks in close, yes, it makes a difference.
Edit: Several players prefer black tape for their sticks because it makes it harder for the goalie/defender to track the puck. Same idea here, except it would be a deterrent. But then again, you and I aren't part of the crowd that just looks for things to blame Mason for. |

Need some clarification please.
Is this a chicken (ostrich, snake, etc.) egg that Hextall purchased? Or has he gained mastery over human biology and found a way to produce his own eggs? And whose face exactly is on this egg? - Mononoke
