I don't get it. He's better AND younger than Cullen AND can play LW AND has the same salary with no cost to acquire. At this stage of FA, though, I wonder if what a player gets is his value. Presumably other teams could have offered him more and I doubt he has any ties to EDM. I know he was injured last year and had a bit of a down year, but man, he is a legit third 3LW / 4C for a bargain basement price.

He went from $4 mil per to $1.1 mil. That's quite a drop-off. He is getting $1.3 mil in buyout money from FLA, but still.

Well said, analytical graphs really have destroyed peoples "eye test" perceptions. It is funny that teams that went heavy on analytics are already backing off them and realizing that all graphs and charts do is stereo type a player without seeing the intangibles of said player....in other words most of it is just a "fad" and an already dying one at that.
- Darklight11

They are calling them anamolies.

It's funny to me to see that Florida who were unlucky last season change their direction & go with analytics, trade their 'grit' guy, sack their non analytic coach have gone backwards in a yuuuge way.

I'm sure the team uses analytics sometimes and other times they go with their gut. I really think when they brought in cullen that was an analytics signing. There's just much more else to a player than the numbers and sometimes it pays off and more often than not it really doesn't. Numbers don't lie, but they don't paint the entire picture.

How was Shags numbers playing with the Ducks? The rags? I seriously don't know. I do know that Sully coached him at the Rags though which may have something to do with it.

What were Kessels numbers like in Toronto?

Just from a fan perspective, the Pens have done a great job creating an identity. Bringing in decent, young, small, quick skill players not coveted by the league at large on ELCs sprinkled in with some expensive stars. The eye test for me this year had Phil almost invisible, but I remember game 6 of last year's Final when Letang and the Sharks disappeared.

i think the whole team declined on every stat last year. thats why im glad we made some moves. kindof freshen things up a bit.

i dont think kessel will decline rapidly by any means. he doesnt really play the physical style that leads to players bodies breaking down quick.

I also like the moves made by the Pens so far.

I disagree with the Kessel assesment, I think that once he loses his legs (the legs are the first to go) he will go downhill fairly quickly. He will still have the good hands and vision, but he uses his speed to a great advantage.

Good thing is we know there's another level to reach since Phil doesn't work as hard. He could spend a few days with Gary Roberts

DK reported that JR was going to turnover the roster. Apparently we didn't even make offers to those guys who left. No offer to Kunitz surprised me.

What also surprises me is the one guy who I thought would surely be gone (Cullen/retirement), might be the only one who comes back.

im not huge on nostalgia, but ill admit no offer to kunitz stings.

id have gladly offered him 1.5 mil. have to think for half a mil hed have stuck around.

daley leaving for that amount of money is fine. even bonino. i wouldnt have ached too hard if they signed him to that deal, as it really wasnt THAT bad. but at the same time, not tying them down to that deal is totally justifiable.

I'm torn on Kunitz leaving. I agree that he could still play a role, I just feel they needed to get some fresher legs in the lineup. From all reports, they feel ZAR and Sprong will be up with the big club at some point. Then you have a problem with the coach possibly scratching a fan favorite and team leader. We have plenty of bottom 6 wings too. It was time IMO.

I honestly believe JR is going to surprise us with a deal for a 3rd line center. JR likes to make a splash.

Thoughts on what it would take to get Tyler Johnson from TB or Bryan Little (and/or Tyler Myers) from WPG?

Kunitz would have blocked some people from playing that are younger and cheaper. They're loaded with left wings in the system that are kind of in a make or break year - DiPauli, Simon, Blueger (obviously also a center option), and then of course ZAR and Adam Johnson and then the existing LWs - Guentzel/Sheary/Hagelin/Wilson/Kuhnhackl.

One of Wilson or Hagelin is probably the 4th line LW, so that's already a decent player Kunitz would have replaced for a lineup spot. Then that guy bumps Kuhnhackl onto waivers, a proven bottom line guy himself. Just didn't make sense to keep Kunitz.

Jussi would have been a nice Cullen replacement at that price IMO, but they are still holding that for Cullen. Again signing Cullen or Jussi waives Kuhnhackl but this time scratches Rowney which I'm fine with.

But if they signed two of Kunitz, Cullen, Jussi, then you end up waiving a proven young wing like Wilson. It just doesn't make sense.

With Druin out of there, I doubt Tyler Johnson is for sail, though I'd love to get him. I'd assume it'd take an NHL ready top 4 LD, a first round pick, and something else of substance.

I see no reason for the Peg to sell off Little. They're turning the corner and he's their criminally underrated 2C. I want no part of Tyler Myers. He's a meh middle pairing guy who's being paid like a top pairing guy. He's less albatrossy than Dion Pheneuf, but an albatross never the less.

Pens sign Kessel two years ago.

Win Stanley Cup twice.

Is there a correlation?

Perhaps a combination of (Corsi Factor/Possession Time) x the square root of (High Danger Chances) could tell us the answer.

Or we can simply look at where the Stanley Cup is traveling this summer.
