Price turns 30 next month and this extension takes effect next summer when he's 31 already so they'll be paying him 10.5mm a year until he's 39 - rangerdanger94
I mean the Rangers are paying Hank 8.5 million cap per year til he is 39 as well |

Yup.
Again, as a percentage of the Cap, Price's deal will probably look equal or better later in his career than Hank's, but either way, it's a huge cost.
Relatedly, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Habs miss the playoffs next year. |

Here is G buyout:
In 2017-18: $2.61M, 18-19: $3.61M, 19-20: $3.61M, 20-21: $1.11M, 21-22: $1.11M and 22-23: $1.11M - airjan23
Side by side, I think Norway Pete makes a good point. I would have rather bought out Staal and kept Girardi as a 6th/7th dman.
After what he signed for in Tampa, they probably could have moved G at the deadline or next summer with a $ retained. Too late now though. |

So $70 million worth of signing bonuses in Price's $84 million contract. Wow.

I know everyone hates Staal, and I would love him moved...but this year could be huge for the Rangers.
Sheltering Staal on the 3rd pair, may help his game a bit. Playing less minutes against less talented players. Maybe it will allow him to improve some value around the league. Help him gain some confidence.
Might be smart to hold onto him and let him try to improve - TPC
I agree, but still think they will do so with the "hope" that Staal's game improves, in a means to showcase him to be dealt by the trade deadline. This way, they can avoid having to buy him out next summer, even at a lesser overall cap hit fee.
The key would be hoping he plays well enough to have a team interested via a trade even at a minimal return, (if he agrees to waive his NMC), to pick up as much of his annual $5.7M cap hit remaining through 2020/21. But hopefully, one of our prospects will be NHL ready by then. If not, and still in contention, a low cap veteran d'man can likely be acquired by the deadline.
Had Staal been bought out this summer, the Rangers would have suffered approx. $17.1M in cap hit charges over the next 8 seasons. That's exactly 3 seasons worth of his 4 remaining on his annual $5.7M contract. Even at lesser overall cap hit fees starting next summer, it would still pay to trade him ASAP. Disposing of as much of his net $22.8M salary he is currently due over the next 4 seasons, is wiser than ending up suffering more overall in net cap hit charges for even longer. |

yeah lets start all the buyout proof payments so we get screwed with another 1/2 season or worse. I'm sure the olympics decision will certify this. |

Here are the numbers if they wait a year. Shows there is really no reason to buy him out before next summer.
2018-19 $2,055,556
2019-20 $3,055,556
2020-21 $3,855,556
2021-22 $1,355,556
2022-23 $1,355,556
2023-24 $1,355,556 - WineryDog
That's about $4M & one net season less as well, to buy Staal out next summer, than it would have been in buying him out this summer (at about $17.1M over 8 seasons). It still pays to trade him prior to the trade deadline if possible, (if he is willing to waive his NMC), to have a team pick up as much of his $5.7M annual cap hit remaining through the 2020/21 season. That's better than saving likely a net little overall via a buyout, even if the trade return value coming here is minimal in comparison to how much that team would be picking up in his cap. |

REALLY happy the way that Shatty signing worked out. Coupled with the fact that he said "No thanks" to Devils larger offer only makes it sweeter.
Add on Montreal signing Price to an INSANE extension and Capitals having a poor off-season so far due to cap constraints, it is VERY sunny in RANGERLAND right now.

The odds right now are likely 60%/40% in favor of seeing the next NHL lockout. These extended length term player contracts with bonus clauses included, yet alone the salaries dished out to some others, including the non elite players, in comparison to the cap % they all represent as opposed to in the past, spells "doom" for another lockout to occur. The bonus clause allowance to reduce the actual salaries of the higher priced extended years in length contracts, for purposes of lowering their possible future buyout, furthers the problem, & is especially unfair for the lower cap market teams.
It's getting to the point where someday, at least one half of the lower ranked players on each teams' roster will have to be paid as per their ranking under $500,000 only. |

I must have missed the woman beater story, did something happen back in Sweden? |
|
|

From one of my blogs in June on G and Staal:
"If either of the two is bought out, the team would carry half the cap hit in dead space for twice the length of their contract. That means if they buy out Girardi, the Rangers would have $2.75 million of dead space for the next six seasons. If Staal is the one bought out, they would have $2.85 million of dead space over the next eight years."
It's the eight years that is the major kicker and would be $2.1 mil each of the next two years, $3.1 the next year, $3.9 mil in year 4, and $1.4 mil each of the following four years. - airjan23
But you're still saving cap space 1st 4 years. It's a choice of having him play at 5.7m a year or allowing a younger player to come in on elc.
FYI. In 4 years Smith, Shatty and Hank contracts up!!
