Those 3 letters in "NMC" are what could be holding up his signing, causing the money and length of term to be worked out for both parties.

It was made known that the delay in completing the trade of Stepan to the Coyotes, was due to them insisting that Raanta being included in the deal, in wanting him as their #1 starter to replace Smith. I feel that the Rangers failure to land others they had in mind in exchange, prior to accepting Deangelo + the #7 overall pick, was to use that #7 pick in another potentially larger trade to follow.
That's since all along, Raanta was inquired on multiple occasions by Winnipeg in the days prior to the trade/waiver freeze period leading to the expansion draft, (via calls received by Gorton), to be their #1 goalie. The key name the Rangers responded back for was Trouba.
But a larger size deal including the additions to Raanta of Miller, their original 21st pick in Round 1, and a top minor league defensive prospect was rejected. That's also why I feel the Rangers thought by acquiring the #7 pick overall from Arizona, & substituting it for the #21 pick, it would be the difference maker in landing Trouba, and possibly backup goalie Michael Hitchinson. Now any deal for Trouba according this past weekend to word in Winnipeg, would require the Rangers to part with Skjei in part, & have a 3rd team involved that has an established top backup goalie available, if not a #1 starter already. That makes Shatty become greater in their picture, after besides needing 2 new centers, plus a new back up goalie of their own, the need to re-sign Smith first, if they do want to "CONTEND while rebuilding on the fly".

Nilsson, or even Chad Johnson, or Kinkaid would do fine under Allaire. Johnson from his earlier stint here, has always credited Allaire with rescuing his game, & he played very well in leading the Flames back to the playoffs last season. He also started more games than expected, due to Elliott struggling during various time stretches.
Your d'men listing would be o.k. for now, except for the worry of the Staal & Deangelo pairing, until we all get to see him first play, & also pending he matures fully off the ice. Holden would do as an alternate for either one since he can play both sides. But Shatty and Deangelo are most important in being RH offensive skilled d'men, that can run a power play, besides mainly Shatty's minutes needed to carry & advance the puck quickly to the forwards to fit A.V.'s coaching style game. If as expected, Shatty results in play remaining longer in the offensive zone, that will make up for some of his defensive weaknesses, and help ease the burden on Hank in chief.
Forward line wise will depend on how good a center they can acquire. Vesey's potential can also make him and Buchnevich switch line rankings. Regardless of any center they acquire, as opposed to your proposed 3rd line, my only wonder still would be if both Hayes & Miller would benefit greater offensively in being reunited with Grabner. That's when they excelled during the first 1/4 to 1/3 of last season until Zibanajed broke his leg, & A.V. split them up the rest of the way, minus a few games. That would be my third line, especially if a better offensive center is acquired to play on the 2nd line. Miller, and Hayes even more so, never returned to their early season offensive levels without Grabner. Ironically, so did the Rangers record become only average as well thereafter.

With Day & Deangelo, the Rangers better have top defense, ..... i.e., attorneys, just in case Day were to witness a bad personal family matter, and Deangelo doesn't fully mature given his past troubles.

If u watch hockey, u would know the Kreider Zib Buchenevich line to start the season last year was almost unstoppable until all 3 of them got hurt. AV for some reason didn't reunite them when they all got healthy. Nash is becoming a 2nd/3rd line guy and nothing wrong with balancing out the lines. Grabner on the 4th line isn't a terrible idea, if Hayes Grabs Millet can't get their magic back from last year I can definitely see Grabs sliding to the 4th line.

I think the kid is going to be real good for us one day, top pairing good. Plays the right side also even though he's a lefty and has great size 6'2 230.

definitely hyping him up

but between Day, Pionk and Berzgelev, maybe the most responsible thing to do with be to just sign Brendan Smith, no other defenseman, and then give all these guys a clear opportunity thta isn't blocked by yet another long term contract

Jan, thanks the terrific recap.

I'm convinced the Rangers had no intention of keeping that 7th pick, acquired in the Stepan deal.

I'm also convinced they had a deal in which that pick and maybe 21st also were involved, but did not materialize at the 11th hour.

Now what? I find it hard to believe they're not going to try to sign Shatty. It makes to much sense. He's a RH shot, can help the PP, and will play top 4 minutes.

The whole Washington thing is fairly clear, many players struggle when changing teams, especially at the deadline, coupled with the notion he probably didn't want to be there in the 1st place.

it was pretty clear in St. Louis where he was 4th in ice time among defensemen before he got traded. Gorton will stay away from giving Shattenkirk a golden parachute contract. we are in a great spot cap-wise and will lose Nash's 7 million plus contract next season when there are beaucoup young, talented UFAs to pick from. Looking for great things from Sean Day and Sergey Zborovskiiy. Need to sign Smith and pick up a reliable veteran or two....

I have been a regular on Ranger blogs since since 1997. When Messier left I needed to find somewhere to vent.

I have never hated anyone as much as I hate you.

Congratulations

IMO, we already have 3 Centers for next year: Zib, Hayes, Boo. I see no reason to sign an overage 4C just to take playing time away from a younger player that can improve as the season goes along.

I see a top pair righty Dman as our #1 priority, but do not want Shatty at his 6+ years and $7M+.

I am really hoping we can see Graves in the lineup this year. I would rather us trade for players like the sedins who are higher paid but we could probably get a 3rd round pick to take them. or maybe thomas plekanic.. something like that. take a bad contract that has short term on it and get an additional asset in return.

Boo Nieves may sniff the big club.....but I dont think he is NHL material.
