The other 30 GMs would literally march on 1901 W. Madison with Torches and Pitchforks.

Hey Enzo...anxious to see if Stan can work his way out of this cap mess that he created. I'm going to hold judgment here until he's made his other moves. Should be interesting...

More than likely the Hawks would need to be creative...

...but Alzner would certainly strengthen what now looks like a rather thin, suspect blueline.

- ArlingtonRob

Creative for sure. Hard to not see another core piece gone to make that work.

Is Simon Despres done? He would definitely be worth a look if he is medically clear. High upside. The concussion issues might give them some cap flexibility too if his comeback isn't happening. If he can get back to where he was you have a potential 2nd pairing guy.

Great listen, Al......... You're a sharp fella why don't you spend the dough and start your own podcast? Maybe a collaboration with JJ and/or the guy who writes for the Athletic? ..... Bet you could sell a seasons pass for 25 bucks or something.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the cap mess that HE made. I like the start though, I really do. ..... No he didn't get cap relief on the Saad deal but he did 2 years out when the Cossack would need to be paid. Same for Murphy and at an even bigger savings of 2 mil per. ......And he still has the Hossa money in his back pocket I hope he spends like it's his communion money.

I see what you're saying as Hammer > Alzner. But, StanBo probably didn't have other assets (he'd be willing to move) that Chayka would want back for Murphy. I think Anisimov AND Kruger should be moved for a Top 6 Wing or another Murphy-esque young Dman. Sign a Veteran Center that can win draws. Again, can the Hawks sign/trade for players up 10% over the Cap or not? I dont fully understand the LTIR offseason rules, but I know you can be 10% over the cap before the RS starts. That is $7.5mil and Hossa's cap hit is $5.25 mil. So, hypothetically, Stan could acquire players via trade or Free Agency by as much as $5mil over the cap....right??
- EnzoD

They can be over in the offseason but have to be under to start the season and players cannot be placed on LTIR until day 1 (unless they ended the previous season on LTIR). This means it'll be really almost impossible to get full value of Hossa's cap hit before the season starts. They can get close (the Pens got something like $3.1m from moving ELC players down right before day 1), but not all.

Even if they can't get a player(s) this summer that would fill his cap hit, they can still maximize space for in-season by being as close to the cap as possible when they place him on LTIR.

Edit to add: They can LTIR him on the last day of training cap if they already have his space replace: "The Club is deemed to have
already fully replaced the unfit-to-play Player with any Player or Players
on the Opening Day Roster."

I read today that they could put him on the last day of training camp and get relief that, way, but they have to already have the space accounted for, so they couldn't do much retooling in the season.

Dream scenario for our forwards:

Move AA for E. Kane

Move Kruger to further clear space

Add Sharp and Thornton on cheap, 1 year deals

Get Hossa to return for the playoffs with zero impact on our cap situation

Saad-Toews-Panik
Kane-Schmaltz-Kane
Sharp-Thornton-Hossa
Hinostroza-Kero-Hartman

Schmaltz and Thornton can be flip flopped if need be

- SimpleJack

If Hossa ends the regular season on LTIR, but plays in the playoffs, can he start next year on LTIR, or does he have to waith until day 2?

Yes, I edited to add this, sorry. It not quite as common, but it's happened - Vokoun (PIT) and Helm (DET) were done that way but it means zero space in-season without trade. It's all so dumb and unnecessarily complicated.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but the cap hits for Forsberg is $750k and Jurco is $800k according to Powers.

List Of Players Who Will Not Receive A Qualifying Offer

https://www.prohockeyrumo...s-receive-qualifying.html

Noticebly absent from the qualifying offers, is Christian Folin, who will become an unrestricted free agent. Fletcher would have liked to have Folin back, but on a two way deal. The Wild did not offer Folin a QO as Folin would have filed for arbitration and most certainly would have been awarded a one way deal.

I'm gathering it's not quite as simple as overspending by Hossa's $5mil and then placing him on LTIR Day 1 of the RS to be cap compliant. So how is the overage allotment during the summer determined? It would seem then that trading Hossa's contract would allow StanBo the most flexibility this summer, right?

The QO probably was, but players and the team can agree to a contract that's different from QO. This usually happens when a player has a bad year and they're willing to take a cut vs being released (where they'd likely have to take a pay cut anyway). Panik did this last year with the Hawks as well.

Yes, trading a player who would be on LTIR for the remainder of their contract is the best option.

If they can't do that, then there's a lot of mechanics that go into how they can use the cap space. If they wait to put him on LTIR day 1, then they already need to have been under the cap with him included on the roster. If they place him on LTIR at the end of training camp, they have to have "already fully replaced the unfit-to-play Player with any Player or Players on the Opening Day Roster." So they can use his cap hit relief but there's no real flexibility here in-season.
