Hawks are $1.5mil over the cap. When they trade Kruger they will be $1.5 under the cap. If I am Bowman I would package AA and our first round pick to Buffalo for Kane with Buffalo retaining 1/2 his salary. Then you will have about $3.5mil under the cap. Sign Gagner for about $2mil and Sharp for 1.5mil.
Saad Toews Panik
Kane Gagner Kane
Sharp Schmaltz Hartman
Fortin Kero Hayden
On day two of the season after Hossa goes on LTIR you have $5mil to fill in some holes in the roster during the season or at the TDL.
E.Kane comes off the books at the end of the season. - -Doh-
If I understand correctly, teams don't bank cap space with a player on LTIR. You are at the cap maximum. And if you do it from the start of the season you are at max cap for the entire season. Therefore, there wouldn't be any money at the TDL.
That's why I think LTIR is not desirable, it's a last resort kind of thing. |

I think too many fans are looking at what Saad did during the 2013 and 2015 Cup runs and assuming "He's a playoff style player, and Panarin is just a regular season style player".
This is flawed....and honestly it surprises me that so many are being fooled into believing this.
Look, Panarin isn't as physical as Saad i get it....but in terms of "playoff style hockey" i think its more of an illusion created by the fact that the Hawks teams Saad played for were deep and dominant(eventual Cup champions)....while Panarin was part of 2 overall inferior teams in 2015/16 and 16/17. Its completely unfair to judge what we saw from Panarin in those 2 first round exits and compare it to what we saw from Saad playing on the best team in the NHL(at the time).
Like I've been saying, if you would have replaced Saad with Panarin on the Richards-Kane line, or the Shaw-Stalberg line, in either 2015 or 2013 I guarantee you we'd all be talking about how great Panarin is(was) during the playoffs, and if we had Saad with AA and Kane over these past 2 years nobody would be calling Saad "a playoff performer", he'd be looking at 2 first round exits just like Breadman was.
So again....please consider this fellow Hawks fans, and don't get fooled into believing that Saad is some big time playoff performer while Panarin shrinks and can't handle the moment. Thats a myth created by the overall quality of the 2 different Hawks teams those 2 players played for. - SimpleJack
Saad has more to offer for the Hawks. Lets be realistic. Panarin can't kill penalties. Saad can. Both are strong posession players. Though Panarin started 80% of his zone starts in the O-zone. He should be a strong possession player.
its a good trade.

Since they originally HAD Saad, I think it is still Panarin for Anisimov and Panik. - StLBravesFan
Dano was also a key piece. Didn't work out under Q and Dano was traded for Ladd, who was supposed to be a key player in a long play-off run. Best laid plans as they say. Dano has been oft-injured with the Jets.

I'm probably in the minority here but I'd love to somehow get Kane, not Neal.
He's got youth, size, speed and skill. Yes he's got some baggage but that's what our Top Notch leadership group is for. Let them set the demands and expectations and enforce them properly. He would give this team a whole new look with lots of aggression. Teams will be a lot less confident coming into our building with him here., not to mention, a little fearful. He has THE EDGE. - Hawkytalk
Distressed asset. Maybe that is the return on the cap dump. AA plus for E Kane with retained?
He's in a contract year. If he has any brain cells at all he would want a big year. Playing top 6 here would give him that. |

The time was absolutely right to Hjalmarsson. Fine, he can still play defense but I much rather have the Hawks not defend so much. Hjalmarsson was a drag on the key offensive component for the Hawks. Keith.
Murphy should help with that. He skates kinda pretty. |

Was that PP that good that it's a loss? - Quicky72
Last year's PP was impacted by Panarin and Kane's sh% going down slightly (as expected) and the second unit being terrible. If the second unit had put up similar number as 2015-17, they would have been top 10ish (remember that 2015-16 was 2nd in the league). Saad won't make up for the loss of Panarin there and the second unit is even worse without Hossa, but I'd much rather the Hawks have a good PK than a good PP. |

The point is that Saad was in the right place at the right time playing for the best team in the league. Panarin got here a year or 2 too late....when the team wasn't the same and had major flaws. If he was part of the 2013 or 2015 forward depth instead of Saad, despite how different their playing styles may be, i bet we'd be singing a different tune when it comes to who the playoff performer is/isn't. |

This is correct. Cap space is banked when a team is not as the daily cap limit, but when a player is on LTIR so that the team can go over the cap, then the team is never under the daily limit and thus never banking cap space. They would not be able to send waiver-exempt ELC players down for some days to maximize banked space like they did last season during the bye week, for example. |

It's totally possible that this is true, but there's no way to know especially since they developed at different rates. In 2013, Panarin was still unknown even in the KHL - his big break out year wasn't for another couple of years. |

Panarin is gone.

I think our front office has an obsession with reliving the glory days with certain players, bringing them back and hoping for the same results. I'm not so sure its a good trend to be seeing.
Either way, I really don't like the fact that we were essentially forced into moving our best young talent in order to gain value in return. Can't move the overpaid veterans that nobody wants(Toews/Seabs/Keith/Hossa), so i guess this is the only way to go to shake up the core. Its going to get us nowhere in the end. Even if you want to argue Saad is somehow better than Panarin(which he isn't), its still like swapping one all-star for another at the same position. IMO we need MUCH more than that and it might take more than one year to solve the problems. |
