I tried to find evidence of that, but I dont think its true. This year's D were moved for peanuts compared to the cost to acquire Gudbranson:
Streit - two trades, but weak returns
Oduya - C propsect, conditional 4th
Brendan Smith - 2nd and 3rd round picks
Benn - C prospect, 4th rd
Hainsey - Kristo, 2nd rd pick
Stone - 3rd and conditional 5th rd picks
Shattenkirk - 2 prospects, 1st and conditional 2nd rd picks
Of those guys moved, I think Smith is the most comparable player and those picks are not equivalent to what VAN paid FLA IMO - WhiteLie
This last weak and buyer limited TDL, Vegas expansion draft factor, aside, you are undervaluing Guddy a great deal by Smith comparison. He's closer in value, not as same type, but for impact as Shattenkirk. Look at that haul. So even less like 1 prospect, 1st and say 3rd would be more. |

Except that he can 'show' all he wants and the name walk. Now we've got 40 games to resign or trade him or lose him for nothing. JB gave up all leverage here - neem55
So worst case scenario is that Gudbranson becomes Willie Mitchell 2.0 and walks into UFA because he either wants too much money or doesn't want to sign in Van?
All that signing him to a 2 year does in that scenario is delay this by one year.

Completely agree, the shattenkirk deal was fair. But the last couple of seasons,99% of teams just aren't willing to pay a lot for a rentals. Too many teams got burned by paying too much for useless rentals (Vancouver Canucks) |

So the Burr and Hansen trades were mirages?!?
Teams are usually hampered at TDL because of cap and contract. Why there are less deals when players of value come with hefty term. They can't make it work to make offer. |

if this is his nickname it needs to stop. I hate all these awful hockey nicknames: Millsy, Dorsey (yeah I heard Dorsey once). Just makes the players sound like unintelligent children. |

Uhm no, but Ottawa got ripped off and Hansen wasn't a rental
smart GMs don't touch rentals. |

That's the NHL culture. Launch a campaign to get them to stop then. |

This has been a great blog so far with Nucky and Hammy having good convos, with Whitey and belchy adding the odd comment |

Shattenkirk>EG all day every day, except the price they paid was similar to what EG cost VAN
We can even try 2016 if you like:
JM Liles - prospect, 3rd and 5th rd picks
Gelinas - 3rd rd pick
Russell - 2 prospects, conditional 2nd
Schultz - 3rd rd pick
Kindl - 6th rd pick
Russell had a nice return, but I dont think Gudbranson has the same reputation. Even so, I dont think Jokipakka (traded away), Pollock (ECHLer) and a conditional 2nd (I dont think they got) is a better than McCann, 2nd and 4th |

The only time they get "creative" is if a guy has a name that already fits the ends in y scheme. Fleury for example. They call him Flower. |
